I'm seeing a lot of threads basically telling me to crack this sucker and repaste, but i'm also seeing people complain about their Keyboards afterwards. I'd rather not spend $40 on a new keyboard after repasting, so i'm asking, are these just horror stories people are talking about, or can i expect to replace my keyboard after opening the case? Any tips? etc.

If you are relatively careful when removing the keyboard from the tape, you will be just fine. I've removed mine a couple times and have yet to have any issues.

it will be fine if you'll be really careful on taking it off... i would say that this is the hardest part on repasting.. :) good luck..

The hardest part is to get it separated from the tape... Try not to bend it and keep your pulling pressure even. It should not take more than a couple of minutes being extra careful.

Protip - Be REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY careful when removing that stupid keyboard. The backing sheet on mine got separated from the rest of the keyboard thanks to that "sticks like glue" double sided tape, and got a rather large tear in it as well. Somehow, when I put it back together the backlight was still uniform though...don't know how that happened. No keyboard replacement for me. :)

I ended up giving up trying to pull it off - what I did was got a flat-headed screwdriver and just wedged it between the metal and the keyboard, digging away at the tape with the screwdriver, and slowly separating it.

I removed mine two times (with tape on) and the RMA guys completely removed the tape (removed it for a third time after the RMA) and it still works

TBH, the tape isn't even necessary. I think they have it as a deterrent from people opening their units.

As long as you are gentle, the tape won't rip the foil behind the keyboard, and there's not much reason to worry. You can still bend the keyboard if you aren't careful, but you could use a pen or a ruler or something to clear the tape if you're worried about it. The tape might be to get rid of some keyboard flex, but I'm not really sure, it seems pretty useless.

I tell you, I was worried SICK trying to get this keyboard off! Why did ASUS ever decide to put that stupid tape on there! Luckily, it still works, although I seemed to have separated part of the foil from the keyboard. I found a link on youtube that talks about shanging the color of the keys by using coloured cellophane type of stuff. Thinking of doing it in blue with cutouts for the WASD keys.

As far as taking it apart in order to repaste the CPU/GPU portions... is it really worth it?

Worse case? $40 on ebay for a replacement.

I think it prevents a tiny amount of flex, but it's mostly an annoyance.

If your temps are OK, don't worry about a repaste yet unless you are looking to do stress tests or something.
