I have created a word document explaining how to create the usb bootdisk with screenshots.

    Download Here

    Kit Download Links

http://www.mikeownage.com/asus/G73Kit.zip [8.6mb] [FULL Include Bios and vBios]
http://mikeownage.com/asus/G73KitLite.zip [2.4mb] [ Lite only includes the vBios]

The kit includes all files required to make the bootable usb drive and all vbios and bios that I have found.

How to use the flash drive once you have it

    1) Boot from your usb flash drive
    2) After the usb drive boots dos will ask you for the time just press enter
    3) Type cd flash
    if using the lite kit
    4a) go to step 5
    if using the full version
    4b) type cd G73vbios
    5)type flash
    6) select the bios you want
    7) done

I only take credit for putting the kit together.

Everything else was provided by other people

Special thanks goes out to Chastity for the very informative post she made regarding the vbios and Ziddy for the actual vbios.

If you want an individual file you can find them all here: http://mikeownage.com/asus/

    [Changelog]
    - The first version of the kit didn't work because the win98 bootdisk used didn't support all required functions of the batch file.
    - The new version uses syslinux and does support all required functions and the steps to creating the usb bootdisk have changed i have included a simple readme in the zip file.
    - You know longer are required to have the HP USB Tool or the win98bootdisk.zip.
    - I have also included a CreateUSB.bat in the folder you open it up and tell it the drive letter and it will create the USB Drive for you.
    - I have updated the kit to include the official asus updated vBios and Chastity's newest bios with overdrive.

Updated as the first version didn't actually work with the version of DOS that was included I have updated the first post with a new method for creating a usb disk that requires no programs to be installed and have a more feature rich version of dos. I have tested this version and it works perfectly.

i don't think it's easier. you just basically click CreateUSB.bat file and tell it the drive letter for the usb drive and it does everything and your usb bootdisk is all done.

Hey man, I've been trying to flash the vBios all day. However, every single time I try to boot up with the USB drive, I get a big grey screen with the words "g system" in the top left corner of the screen. I am unable to do anything on this screen except for ctrl+alt+del to restart the lappy to switch the boot order again. I've tried both that Gary guy's method and your method and am getting the same results. What's g system even mean?

k, what did you use for the bootfiles when you made the drive bootable?

Also, does your stick have some sort of recovery crap built-in?

Running the bat file it says no access to MBR....any ideas ?
oh and the official vbios is the one called "stock" right ? no idea what overdrive is and how to use it so I figure might as well go with the official one or ?

I seem to have successfully updated the vBios but I have no idea how to update the bios with this.
Edit: nevermind, got it. I'm none too quick at this.

It shouldn't be a problem to have updated the vBios before the Bios, right?

I have a G73jh-b1 and I just installed the latest Ati display drivers. I ran 3dMark06 and I did not have any problems. I didn't get any higher numbers than the original display drivers though.

After you follow the instructions to create a bootable USB stick. Turn on your computer and press ESC a few times during the boot process. Once the boot selection menu comes up pick the USB stick and you are in.

    Cheers,

My USB stick comes with something called "U3 System Files". It comes up as a separate disk. However, I have the actual thumbdrive formatted to FAT32. Should I be worried about the software this flash drive comes with?

I have one of those. No idea if those will work or not but it should. (I use mine as an IT toolkit but have not messed with it to make it bootable) If you want to try, just format the partition of it that is the empty flash drive side. Don't format the side the U3 software side is installed on.

I always remove the U3 fud. I find it gets in the way of using the disk when I want it bootable.

How exactly do you remove it, Chastity? If you take a look at my attachment, it comes up as a separate CD drive, which is not deletable. Is there another method?

Edit: u3.com/uninstall no longer works :\

Hey guys, I have created a bootable USB thumb drive using the HP tool. My desktop can boot from the thumb drive with no problems, it pulls up a DOS prompt.

I can't get my G73 to boot from the same drive though. I have tried using esc to get to the boot menu, I tried setting the thumb drive as boot option #1 in the bios, and I tried selecting the thumb drive from the list in the "save and exit" portion of the bios.

All of these result in a blank screen with a flashing cursor in the upper left corner of the screen. I have to ctrl+alt+del to restart.

Any idea what I am doing wrong here?

    Thanks for the reply. :)

Still the same result though. The USB stick does show up on the list of devices, but when I select it from the boot device menu all I get is the blank screen with flashing cursor.
