So I am currently running stock drivers with no issues. Previously I had been running 10.5 and 10.6 and while performance was better obviously stability was an issue. I was experiencing GSOD randomly.
I was curious to know what the 10.4 drivers are like as I have not used these before?
I have tried pretty much everything on here that has helped people steer through gsods such as over clocking uninstalling creative etc. But nothing has helped.
Is it safe to say that I just stick with the stock drivers and wait for something from asus??

Well coming from first hand experience...
I was playing games for quite some time about 2 months on BIOS 206 and playing on 10.4 drivers and I have been getting frequent GSOD's from a wide variety of games.
- League of Legends (yeah I know)
- Dragon Age Origins
- Sometimes even from WMP movies, I was watching a subbed video when it GSOD'd
So I would say no better than 10.5 or 10.6 with your experience. As I'm writing this I got my disc to roll back to stock drivers. I hope for the same stability as you have my friend.
Hope this helps. (Success in BIOS 209 update btw! Yahoo!) -
I recommend getting the bios 209 since it fixes many gsod issues. It also does other things like underclocking when not in use.
for advance users, vbios in ziddy thread is worth looking. -

10.6 alpha drivers here work great for me. Every function works, and they simply install with no modding.
No crashes. -
Ok so I have 209 BIOS and tried my luck with 10.6 drivers. And so far so good (touch wood). Dirt 2 for about an hour no issues. Still yet to try BC2 and gta eflc, the 2 titles I have had the most problems with.
But prior to installing 10.6 (when i had tried the 10.? drivers once before) I had had a bit of trouble while uninstalling drivers where the screen would black out and freeze up. Id have to hard reset and CCC would still be on the laptop. So I assume there was a bit of trouble with drivers due to that anyway. Possibly contributing to my gsod issues. But for some reason this time unistalling stock drivers worked perfect and asked me to reboot where is previously hadn't. Also asking for reboot upon installation of 10.6 drivers, which it also hadn't before.
Heres hoping that my beloved G73 is on the way up and I can forget about all these issues. By the way I spoke to asus tech support today and he seemed to think 209 bios and 10.6 should fix gsods.
Good luck to all that are plagued with this issue! -
O rly? I'd bet against that honestly, since a handful here have stated that 10.6 still gives them issues. Back to the OP, there's a 8.692 release that is 10.1, newer than the stock and just as stable.
-
I agree with Ziddy on this...anyone having GSOD problems is going to have them on any driver version.
FWIW, 10.6 is just as stable for me as the stock drivers. -
-
Also...
BIOS 205
The only GSODs I've ever seen were playing Blu-Ray disks on notebook monitor (random, anywhere from 5 to 30+minutes into a disk). Doesn't happen on HDMI-only output (at least hasn't yet). I originally thought it was the 10.4 Catalyst that caused the crashes but it turns out it happens on stock video drivers as well.
Just for fun, I recently removed Creative stuff and I'm now running on latest Realtek codec and ATI HDMI packages (from Realtek site). Audio works well. -
The worst for me so far with regards to GSOD's has been 10.5 drivers.
But like I said I dont think that I got a clean uninstall and clean install on those drivers. Only this time around did t work with out the laptop freezing.
Time will tell. -
Ok so just tried BC2 smooth as a babies behind. No lags or skips frames. perfect game play. And no GSOD!
Ill try gta EFLC next and see what that comes up with! -
GTA EFLC after an hour and no GSOD. Looks like i'm finally GSOD free now. Hoo F'ing RAY!!!!!!
-
Yeah I really don't trust the install if anything crashes during the install process. That's specifically why I personally do a complete disk image of the system drive with Acronis. I'll only feel comfortable with a restored drive if the install crashes.
I know lots of you guys use registry sweepers, etc., but I've had good luck doing Catalyst uninstalls/installs from the command line, so I always do it this way:
1) Open a command prompt window as administrator.
2) Change to the ATI driver "bin" directory
(e.g. C:\ATI\Support\10-6_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc\Bin64)
3) Run the command "atisetup -UNINSTALL ALL -OUTPUT SCREEN"
4) Wait until it completes then do as it says - reboot.
5) Repeat steps 1 and 2 above
6) Run the command "atisetup -INSTALL -OUTPUT SCREEN"
7) Wait until it completes then do as it says - reboot.
*edit* Good to see BC2 working smooth for you....always runs great on high settings for me...load times much better than stock drivers! -
For me the question is:
VGA drivers with or without CCC? -
with is a plus. Unfortunately for me, It crashes once finish installing ccc, the drivers works but I have to uninstall ccc.
-
Because we are discussing a laptop with a mobility graphics card, I would say if you need the features included with CCC, then it's probably important enough to have it installed. If, OTOH, we were talking about a desktop graphics card, I would then say it's a bloated cow and you would be better off installing only the display driver, along with ATI Tray Tools. The issue is, ATI Tray Tools last I heard doesn't fully support mobility graphics cards, otherwise here, CCC would be gone in a heartbeat.

TweakForce X-Treme G Catalyt 10.5
Can try these if you want.
-
Ziddy you tried them yet? I'm glad they're making them but they're a bit slow if 10.6 is already out. Wouldn't mind more detail on:
HDTV Pixel Formatting
Catalyst AI Tweak
Triple Buffering Tweaks
Main 3D rendering Perf. Tweaks
Area Anisotropic Filtering Tweaks -
This is my first post here... I tried the TweakForce drivers, they too GSOD on me playing bc2. Wonder what is it asus did to the drivers.
-
On catalyst 10.6 I still GSOD for League of Legends and WEI( I have creative uninstalled and only use realtek 2.49. I also updated by bios to 209 without and key light issues. Reverting back to stock makes the problem go away, but it makes me sad. Same with 10.5 for me...

Just to let you know. Still no GSOD since I reverted back to 10.6. Been playing countless hours of games/movies. Nothing at all.
I did get a black screen yesterday though, that was after I set windows to operate for performance setting it all t classic, but switched straight back and havn't had a problem!
Good luck to you all! -
Thanks Chastity and Panzer06, setting the setting vram to 1100 did the trick( at this point I didn't want to mess with unofficial bios). I"m still disappointed with having to do this ghetto fix, but hey it works. Better than trying to return it to best buy who probably would say it's a software problem and charge the 15% restocking fee(however, if I somehow find a hardware problem within the next couple days before my 14 day time runs out I"ll jump on return.)
-
Cheers, -
It does everything I want it to with the fix. It's just that I"m a little disappointed in ASUS support that's all. As I've seen that quite a bit of people have the same thing and I see the unofficial bios fixes the problem.

Just be glad you have a workaround. Some aren't that lucky.
