I haven't experienced an overheat shut down yet, but my idling is frighteningly high (70C) and when I play games for less than 30 minutes it jumps into the mid 80's. My G73jh-a1 is about 2 weeks old and I have no idea why this is happening. Can anyone offer me assistance?

Mine was experiencing the same issue. You need to replace the thermal paste. There are several threads that discuss the mod.
-
Erm, if I send it back to ASUS can I get that done for me?
-
yes you can send it back for RMA, tell them it overheats, and they will know what to do.
-
Do it yourself and you can use your own paste and get it done right.
But to answer your question more simply - yes, you can. But there is no guarantee it will be any better. -
So what is the process for RMA'ing this?

@Hnim
Whats wrong with the card running in the mid 80's? -
mid 80's 30 minutes into playing is distressing to me, but moreso the idling at 68-71 is pretty abnormal.
-
Could anyone please tell me how to go about RMA'ing this? I purchased the computer from the website "J&R", I'm not entirely sure how relevant that is.

Do you have a good ventilation in your room while using your G73? Why don't you try putting notebook cooler, give it a try. -
If your only hitting in the 80's while playing then you don't need to RMA it.
-
My idle is at about 70, and has been for every g73 I've had (and after every repair).
My ambient has gone from 33 to 27, and it still idles at 70 or so. Considering the GPU has been changed several times, and it's been repasted several times ... I figure this is about normal for my elevation and ambient. -
So repaste is not necessary?
-
I'd say no need for a repaste. Some will disagree, and so if you *want* to, then go for it, but I wouldn't bother. Idle at 70 is high-ish, but it's also a high end performance card in a laptop. *shrugs*
It isn't high heat that kills hardware, it's large changes in heating and cooling that'll kill the solder joints, and ruin capacitors (although capacitors... *sigh* million reason why they go kaput). -
If you just turned on your G73 with 70c temp that's weird. But if you get 70c idle after playing games it's normal. 80+ temps while playing is normal. If you don't have good air circulation in your room where you play then you'll get high temp. Get a notebook cooler it will help you lower temp.
-
I get 50-55 Idle here in the Philippines and its HOT here. I only got these good temps after repaste, IMHO, you should repaste.
-
-
I believe it was said before that the G73JH paste degrades over time, mine did in 4-5 months of ownership. So i decided to repaste.
How long have you had yours?
-
Don't listen to the people who are telling you that your Temps are too hot!
70c idle and mid eighties while gaming is average and normal for the G73jh.
Poeple on this forum who had overheating issues had temps in the nineties or even hundreds. The exact number at which your laptop will shutdown depends on the bios version but is believed to be 114c with the latest bios.
On the other hand it's always better to have lower temps so you have to decide if you want to repaste or try to RMA. Just be aware that there are risks regardless of what course of action you take.
Since you just got the laptop it might be possible to return it for an exchange. However, it's unlikely another new G73jh will have significantly better temps. -
