So my G73's power adapter decided to die :(
I've got a 90W Universal Laptop power adapter (15-20V, 5A), but I'm hesitant to try it on my laptop...I'm guessing it would be a bad idea?

    Thanks!

If I am correct, your G73's power adapter is 150W. So I'd be hesitant too.

Sadly I dropped my laptop off a table accidently, and it landed straight on the side, smashing the part that goes into the laptop. I manged to solder it up and fix it, but wanted to get a new one. Would people recommend buying another OEM one from Asus? I think it was like $65 ish, or go for one like the Targus mentioned above?

Well, I did, sorta :(. It slid off the table [about 12 inches or so high off the ground]. Laptop is perfectly fine, wasn't that hard of a landing or anything, but the power plug that goes into the laptop got messed up....I guess it took most of the fall...

Do you live in the US or Canada? Just use your ADW.

FYI for anyone looking at this thread. I ordered from this site as it was the cheapest after looking, and the power supply was broken on arrival. The adapter piece that plugs into the 3 different adapters supplied is bent/broken and therefore will not fit correctly. I have contacted the company for either a complete refund or exchange, will update on how they handle the situation.

Yep, they offered a return, standard return shipping, or advanced return shipping. I chose advanced to get it here the fastest [required them to have my CC]. They also upgraded it to 2 day shipping :).

Edit: Received the new one, works great. Recommend this company :).

It should work. The adapter is rated 100v to 240v. While working in Asia. I found that the adapter actually runs a bit cooler due to the 220v. I think the idea is higher voltage, so it used less current...that was with other brands of laptop.

The Targus Power adapter is the same size, if not a tad larger, than the ASUS one.

Poster probably meant leaving one at home and one at the other laptop destination so it was not necessary to carry it back and forth. :mask:

i recently purchased this adapter. i am trying it now. comes with 3 tips, as mentioned. one of the tips is obviously too big. the other two are almost the same, one with a black tip and one with the yellow. the black tip looks closest to the stock ac adapter tip and has a matching groove on it. it didn't work. i had to use the yellow tipped adapter to make it work. the yellow tip has two grooves on the tip but the stock tip has one.

when i plug in the adapter with the yellow tip, i hear a tiny buzz sound as i am plugging it into the laptop. the stock one doesn't do this.

so, sorry for the stupid question, but is this the same tip that everyone else is using and should i worry about this buzzing sound? thanks

That's probably something too quiet for me to detect. I can telly you that I bought two of them so I wouldn't have to pack power adapters around all the time. I leave one in the office and have two in different parts of the house. I've gamed for hours with them and they work just fine. I bought to of them from the link mentioned above for the price that I would've paid for one OEM. Pretty happy with them. I like the little nylon zipper pouch that it comes in too. Pretty cool.

    ^^ thanks for the reply.

has anyone else bothered to try listening for a buzzing sound? one thing i forgot to mention is that this is while the laptop is running. I pulled out the original adapter and inserted the targus one.

also, everyone is using the yellow tip with the two grooves on it, right? ...even though the stock tip has one groove?

ON the tips if you do not know this some are center negative and some are center positive, you need to check this before you plug it in as it can damage the power unit in your notebook.
It should tell you what tip to use for each type, you just need to look on your old power brick to see what one to use on the G73.

Personally I would have sprung for the OEM one from Asus. I just have never trusted any of the Universal adapters. Especially not one that doesn't match the exact wattage. I'm sure it will work fine, its just my personal feelings after having so many issues with the universal ones in the past.

sorry to keep bumping this thread. i didn't notice that the diff tip adapters have numbers on them (L1, L2, and L3).

I was using L2 (yellow tip because it was the only one that was working (also has the two grooves). Just now, I tried the L1 tip even though it wasn't working the first time I tried it and now it works???

However, I still hear a slight buzzing sound for a split second when plugging in. Does it matter which tip I am using since they both work?

I am still a bit paranoid about this buzzing sound when I plug in.

    Thanks guys.

I use the L1 tip. I hear nothing when I plug it in. The L1 is the correct size and polarity. The Targus provides the correct voltage and enough amperage to do the job. I've had no issues at all with either of the two I purchased.

I usually buy based on the "too good to be true" motto. That power supply probably has $15 to $20 worth of parts in it. If they were selling it for $10 I would shy away because they would've had to shortcut some pretty poor components to get the price down that far and still make money. The OEM always doubles their money (100% markup) on replacement parts. $30 versus $65 seems about right to me so I'm pretty comfortable with the part.

    YMMV

The buzzing sound you hear is the transformer .
Some do make a sound when starting , I would look on google and see if any others are having one fail more than normal.
Some transformers do make a buzzing sound when started but it is not the norm for them to do that now day's. It does not mean that it is going to fail but it could indicate that there is a issue with it. There is no easy way to test this with out putting it under a load with test equipment .

i see. thx for the info bnut.

jody, i tried using the L1 tip. it works but when i rotate it, it will disconnect. it has to be in a certain position to work. it buzzes right before it shows "AC Mode ON" or whatever on the screen.

the L2 tip seems to fit inside the hole but a little tighter, much like the stock tip. but it makes a buzzing sound from the transformer like you say, but i can rotate the tip and it will still stay on AC Mode.

so it seems to me like if L1 is the correct tip to use(although it seems looser when plugged in) then mine is not working properly. L2 works but you guys are saying it's the wrong tip to be used.

is this right? i actually went to centrix's website and they don't even list the adapter on their site anymore...coincidence? :p

As I mentioned before, one of my units the L1 works flawlessly, on another it doesn't work at all, but the yellow works perfectly. :shrugs:

Hmmm. I will check that out. I've not had the L1 ever disconnect, but I don't move the laptop once it is plugged in either. It feels pretty solid. I'm not too crazy about wiggling a connector that has 150 Watts and 19Vdc running through it. I'm afraid that generating an arc would be bad for the power conditioning circuit inside the laptop.
