G73 Ram

I was wondering if the maximum RAM for the G73 is 8GB because i was just browsing on gentech and they were offering a 16GB RAM option for the g73.

 

u can go upto 16 GB assuming a (4*4GB) configuration....though, one might wonder why u would need that much ram

 

I don't see why you would need 16GB of ram..

 

It's the memory controller on the processor that supports up to 8GB of memory but that doesn't mean 16GB won't work.

 

no it shouldn't, 64 bits should support a lot more than 16 GB of addressable memory, and by a lot more I mean about 256 TB, I doubt that the memory controller is limited to that.

 

I'm just stating the specs of the processor not the math behind a 64bit proc.

 

well, i just wanted to know if it was possible but alright. So it can even go beyond 16GB, am i correct? I am planning to use my g73 for motion graphics in Cinema 4D and After Effects.. Does more ram help those applications in any way?

 

The only thing Intel will guaranty is 8GB and it looks like the resellers are confident in 16GB working. I'm sure some people here have done it already. Beyond that you would need to test but I don't know if they even make sodimms bigger than 4GB. Like posted earlier it's not a 64 bit limitation but it's possible it won't work because of limitations built into the processor. You may want to invest into a SSD instead.

 

Do note that Win7 Home Premium has a memory cap at 16GB, regardless of its architecture. You will have to upgrade to Professional to use more.

I have 12GB in my G73 and it's fully recognized. My need for this is virtualization/VMWare and I can say it works great!

 

It is much simpler and just a little bad use of words from Intel. What they meant was the internal memory controller of the coreI7 supports 8GB per slot! not in total. at least that's what I was told. So it does support in case of the G73 a maximum total of 4x8 = 32GB or RAM. Well however even with a 64 bit system only in VERY rare occasions is more than 3-4GB of RAM used even with Games. VERY VERY VERY VERY RARE are more than 6BG of RAM even with very big databases.

 

a 64 bit processor can address more than 16 GB of ram , any 64 bit processor can do that.

 

a 64bit system can adress I think 6 terrabyte ... hmm maybe 64 terrabyte not sure. Any older CoreDuo can address that full amount as long as the memory controller of the mainboard is design for it. The Core models have an internal controller ... still it is only a restriction of the size per slot ... and I am not sure that restriction is real in the future. Usually it is a restriction because that 8GB was maybe the biggest single RAM module available and so they guarantee it to be compatible with that. Bigger once may work without any issue but still .. this restriction ONLY applies to the GB per slot not total amount of RAM. 4x8GB for the G73!

 

A simple bios/firmare upgrade should take care of that, all the memory controller does is physical addressing.

 

Well I totally agree although there is a bit more to it. As I said I don't even believe that there will be any issue if you ever use a 16GB module. It is simple that the manufactor has to guarantee compatibility and doing that to something not even made yet is simple stupid!

I manage systems with +64GB of memory I hope 64bit can do more than 16GB.

 

Guys its 8GB per stick. If a 8gb stick exist, technically you can upgrade to 32GB.
But for now only 16gb is available. Hope this clears all the confusion.

Because 4x8=32? See, I didn't say what you said not to say.

Initially, when I said the the G73 had a max RAM of 8GB as stated on the ASUS site, I was told, no, it's 16GB. Okay, when I started using 16GB as the max, I was told, no, it's 32GB, but there aren't 8GB sticks available. At some point someone is going to say 64GB and at that point I will roll my eyes until I see the front of my brain.

 

Do you notice a difference in the programs you use as opposed to 8GB's of ram?
