I was bringing her in for a standard landing after an uneventful mission (I was shutting down windows like normal) and as soon as the wheels touched the runway (as soon as the windows shut down screen appeared) I received loud static over the radio and lost control of the jet (I heard loud static out of the speakers until windows shut down and the computer turned off).
When I attempted to maintain control of the aircraft (the next time I started the computer) there was no response to the flight controls (the G73 wouldn't boot). My engine fire lights flashed on my instrument panel (all the standard blue lights came on but the hard drive wouldn't activate and the screen stayed black). I attempted to activate the fire suppression system using the backup electrical bus (I tried multiple reboots after removing all power and pressing the power and CMOS reset button with various combinations). At this point there wasn't much runway remaining and the brakes were not working due to the hydraulic leak (I called Asus Support and they walked me through the power system troubleshooting process). The redundant system warning panel sparked, began smoking, and then went blank (I got disconnected from Asus tech support twice!). I knew my only option was to reach for the ejection seat handles and punch out (I turned to this forum since an RMA is inevitable).

    Accident Background Summary:
    Crash Time/Date: 0525 Zulu / 26 Jun 2010
Aircraft Flight Hours (How long I've owned the G73) - 3 months
Maintenance Issues (G73 issues) - Engines would not light randomly (the boot would hang and restart every 5-10 start ups; maybe this crash was inevitable)
Productions Data - Stealth F-117 Bomber (BIOS 206, all stock drivers)
Aircrew Status - Examined by flight doc and released with minor
injures (mad as heck and disappointed I'll be without my G73 for 2 weeks)

All pilots with prior Stealth experience are directed by HQ to contact the command post to provide data to prevent future mishaps and ejections (any inputs prior to my RMA are appreciated).

"Roger, Roger what's your vector, Victor?"

Just in case you're wondering - no, I'm not kidding. This stinks!

Twice - RMA for the same thing! Shirly...I mean, surely you can't be serious! (Glad you recognized the quote, deplaya. That movie surpasses generations!)

Looks like I'm RMAing to USA2 which is Indianapolis, IN. They wouldn't let me switch to USA1 (Fremont, CA). It seemed like the Asus rep at least tried...or, she put me on hold for 5 minutes and filed her nails.

Hey Esparoba2, how did your G73 return? Scratched, replaced, same as when you sent it? Did you ship back the backpack, mouse, power strip, etc. or keep everything? Thanks!

Hey, you don't have to apologize. You're going to love the G73; too bad you have to wait until August. I'd still recommend it even though I'm well aware of the random issues and faced with an RMA. Can't beat the bang for the buck!

You said that you heard loud static out of the speakers, is it possible that noise was coming from the hard drive?

Brilliant description of the issue. +Rep

    • I was shutting down windows like normal
    • As soon as the windows shut down screen appeared I heard loud static out of the speakers until the computer turned itself off
    • Now I can't get windows to boot anymore
    • The laptop powers up (i.e. blue lights) but the hard drive doesn't activate leaving me with a black screen.
    • I tried multiple reboot combinations with CMOS
    • I called Asus Support and they walked me through power troubleshooting
    • Asus tech support disconnected me twice! Zomg!
    • I turned to this forum since ASUS support suxx.
A little more streamlined for the lazy like me. :p

Edit: Oh, and sorry to hear about your situation. :( Best of luck to you.

Hey Kalim, you've got a new avatar!
Yeah, it was definitely the speakers. It was literally full blast static white noise that started right when the windows shut down screen appeared. I didn't install/uninstall anything prior or even mess with sound settings; just surfed the net and played some COD. Weird.

Glad you liked the description. I tried to direct my frustration from the G73 into a creative post.
