Hello everyone. I haven't been on in a while as everything has been running relatively smoothly for the past few months. (Except for some damage to the machine after my RMA's, but what can you do?) But I return with another problem! Yay!
I've been having some trouble with Steam icons, so I took some steps to fix them. (ie deleting the icon cache.) After I did this my computer froze about 30 seconds after startup. I've finally got it fixed after about 3 hours of working in Safe Mode and whatnot, but when anything related to Steam tries to launch, the computer locks up again.
I've heard that Steam has some problems with the G73jh (Creative?) But I'm not quite sure what to do about this. It was working fine last night. Any help would be appreciated.
Well, I was just browsing these forums and it locked up again. I wasn't doing anything Steam related...

Have you updated all your G73 software and drivers? What version of Realtek drivers do you have installed?
If you still have Creative installed, disable Bass Boost and see if that helps with Steam crashes, as this was the main culprit. -

I've been playing a Steam version of Mafia 2 for about two hours and everything's running smoothly.
Hmm..I've noticed the volume controls have changed. (Top left corner.)
Before they were a blue dial-like thing in the middle of the screen. I think I actually prefer the new one, but why did this happen? -

You must have removed or killed atkosd2, which has the 3d indicators for the hotkeys.

Are these "new" icons default Windows, or are they brought with Realtek? (I deleted everything related to Creative. I didn't use it anyway.)
And how would I go about restoring atkosd2? -

ATKOSD2 is part of the atk driver package, it is not related to creative or realtek. What you are seeing is atkosd, which runs if atkosd2 isn't, you can check your task manager.
You must have either disabled atkosd2 in the registry or in selective startup from msconfig, or removed the exe file. To get it back you can uninstall and reinstall the atk package from ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support- -

Yep, that did. I forgot I had disabled it on startup, along with a number of other programs. Thanks for the help. -
haven't had any problems with my g73jh and steam. I still have the Creative App installed with bass boost enabled. Works with Steam perfect.
If I knew another way to mess with the bass or just subwoofer I might uninstall it.
