I just got a G73jh-A1 from Tiger Direct last week and I'm having issues with the Bluray drive. If I put a Bluray disk in the drive, the autorun feature doesn't work and If I try and play it with the supplied Cyberlink PowerDVD 9 software, the program crashes and becomes unresponsive. DVD's seem to work fine though.
I called ASUS tech support and they are sending me WinDVD (whatever the program's called) for free to see if that fixes my problem, but I feel this is a hardware issue. Has anyone else experienced these issues? My Bluray drive is a Mis hita BD-CMB UJ141AS if that helps.

Avatar doesn't work on any version of WinDVD lower than 2010 Pro. The ASUS supplied version does not work and will not be updated. I also tried the full version of ArcSoft Total Media Extreme and Avatar will not work on it either. Other Blu-rays work with either. The issue is the same no matter which BD-ROM or laptop I use.
BTW, Corel recently lowered the price to $39 for the full version of 2010 Pro.

^Thanks for the info about WinDVD Pro 2010, I just downloaded it. Unfortunately, I'm still running into the same problem with this program as well. I tired to play my copy of Avatar and it caused the program to stop responding, as well as all my other Bluray discs. Also, when I click on my E: drive, the same thing happens - my explorer stops responding.
I'm guessing this has to be some sort of hardware issue with the Mis hita Bluray drive...maybe it's not compatible with Windows 7 64?
Edit: I guess the swear filter won't let me say M I S H I T A - lol, that's brand of my bluray drive! -
The G73JH-A1 is suppose to come with a Blu-ray drive, so as far as compatible, it should be. Don't think this is likely and on the off chance, have you remove Creative yet?
-
What do you mean - remove my creative drivers?
-
The systems come with Creative Labs Sound Driver software. Some people have problems with it installed so they remove it.

Thought I played Avatar fine on my G73, but I can't remember for sure. I'll be home in a few days and can try it. I am using Cyberlink PowerDVD 10.
-
Okay, so I uninstalled the two creative drivers and when I restarted my PC my screen flickered a few times and then a couple minutes later, the screen went dead! After a restart, the same thing happend! I ended up just going into safe mode and doing system restore, everything seems to be ok now (knock on wood).
On another note, It seems as if any disc I put in the drive is now unreadable. Asus tech support is worthless! In case you guys didn't already know. Why can't I just get someone on the phone that speaks english as their first language? -
true. Avatar played on my G73 .. I believe I used PowerDVD 10 trial. Please keep in mind that Software Bluray players need a AACS B+ DRM key update every year I think. You can download the trial version of PowerDVD10 and see if it was that issue. PowerDvD9 without the key update would likely not work with the changed Copy-protection.

Finally, I got Asus tech support to send me a replacement Bluray drive. I hope it is in fact, faulty hardware.
-
I got my my replacement Bluray drive today, installed it and everything works perfectly now! It definitely was a hardware issue.
-
Just as an aside, I highly recommend ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre 3 for playing Blueray discs.
-
I used the OEM version and it worked great until Avatar. Avatar wouldn't play at all with the Arcsoft software. Had to buy WinDVD 2010 Pro to get that one title to work. Perhaps they have a fix for that by now.
Cheers, -
They have, as I have played Avatar with it many times. It's also a lot cheaper then WinDVD or PowerDVD (check newegg).

Arcsoft Tm3 on egghead is $59 and windvd 2010 pro is $39 upgrade and $49 full version. Seems the gap is a lot less and works in reverse.
Cheers,
