This is the second time my G73 has frozen up.

The first incidence was when I was dealing with the language bar and attempting to add another language. It froze up, and I removed it through safe mode.

The second incidence would be today when downloading Steam. Froze in the same manner.

Is this a problem specific to my laptop? I wanted to download Portal :(

was there any kind of sounds being played with Steam or anything or was it the actual download.... There is a known compatability issue with Steam and the Creative software that comes loaded with the G73, try uninstalling them and try again.

It was the process of actually downloading Steam. It was updating and I believe it was like at 99% complete and then it froze. I'll try uninstalling Creative.

How long did you wait when it froze to do a hard shutdown... its been a long time sense ive downloaded Steam myself, so it could have been running a check before finishing making it appear its frozen...

I waited at least a minute. After that, I started it up again normally. It was doing the update again, and froze again.

dumb question, but you are downloading steam from steampowered.com right? Sometimes 3rd party sites or mirror sites can corrupt the files for whatever reason.

ok, well if deleting the creative software doesnt fix the issue, then im not really sure what the problem is. Alot of people, excluding me, have run into a ton of issues that are simply fixed by deleting the creative software. Steam seems to be the #1 conflicting program with it.. got my fingers crossed it works for you.

All of them, if it says creative, just un-install it. Pretty much it has been known to freeze the G73 and cause other misc problems. And from what has been found, the creative software doesnt make the sound, sound any better. So its technically just a waste of space anywho.
