Is there way to force 13x multi for 720QM and OC with it? I newer seen the 13x multi for all four cores. Every time when I hit TT button and look in to setFSB it's posting 142FSB and 12 multi not 133 and 13 multi.

The multiplier drop is the main reason the non-extreme mobile i7's aren't very good overclockers. If you need raw performance, you'll need to get a 920/940XM

OK, one more thing. When I want to OC my CPU more than 1850Mhz at all four cores I must turn on TT otherwise my NTB crash immediately after I set clocks. So why it's more unstable to set higher clock without TT for me? I thought the TT can only do one thing and that is to OC the FSB to 142Mhz.
I am planning to buy the 940XM but for now it's too much for my budget.

I was afraid of that. In other words, there is no point in even OC huh?

Nope. Unless you happen to get a really, REALLY good overclock-able chip.

If you have good RAM you have better overclocking potential. I thinking about 4x2GB zeppelin 1600Mhz.

    Hi all!

I have a problem related to my CPU. I just realized that according to the "Intel Turbo Boost Technology Monitor" gadget, my CPU speed is maximum 1.73GHz. I am absolutely sure that it used to be higher sometimes, like up in the 2.8ish or something. Also when I switched the power option to "high performance" it would jump up high and stay that way until I switched back to "balance mode".

Another interesting observation is that my "twin turbo button" acts weird. I took two pics of HWiNFO, one with twin turbo turned off, and one with it turned on.

    TWIN TURBO OFF:
Képfeltöltés.hu - korlátlan ingyen tárhely képeidnek, regisztráció nélkül

    TWIN TURBO ON:
Képfeltöltés.hu - korlátlan ingyen tárhely képeidnek, regisztráció nélkül

When it is on, the ratio is 12.00, when it is off the ratio is 13.00?!

And this is the highest ratio / GHz (1.17) that I can get, no metter what I do. This was definitely different in the past. I just realized it today, so don't remember since how long it has been like this.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Intel Turbo Boost Technology on the Core i7 will increase speed wen needed, so the Intel gadget is only going to reflect that under load.

For the HWiNFO status...looks like maybe you have your minimum processor state set high. The multiplier should be 7 at idle regardless of Asus Twin Turbo setting. For your selected power plan, set minimum processor state to 0% and maximum processor state to 100%. Then you should see correct behavior - Intel Turbo Boost Technology will handle everything with those settings.

Overclocking my 740qm in my G53JW has been pretty worth it... I'm able to run Prime95 for 24+ hours at 2008mhz (all 4 cores).. This is about a 154.5 FSB. Anything higher than this and one of the cores will hardware fault in Prime95.

I'm not sure what percentage of a speed increase im seeing but my Wprime score went from 15.6 seconds stock to 14.0 seconds after the overclock. That's a measureable speed increase. Will it really make a difference overall? Probably not.

It's probably been asked already.. but are the CPUs actually swappable in our units so that we can get a Extreme edition M chip?

Have you had any noticeable temp differences?

Of course.. the fan definately cranks up a little louder than on stock clock, but it's not a lot louder, it's very tolerable. I haven't actually looked at before and after temps yet.. but just judging from the fan difference, it's probably 8-10 more Celsius.

This doesn't really matter, but why don't you update both of them? These upgrades are there for a certain reason which is called bugfix...

Got it RMA'd. have 213 bios and chastity's vbios.

I tried oc'ing using the built in amd overclock thing. i maxed out the two bars, clicked ok, then it shut down. :p rebooted. tried auto tuning my laptop, hanged, restarted again. :p what's the safest settings for oc'ing a laptop anyway? :p do i have to do a trial and error sort of thing?

I used to OC when encoding a video, that was the only real reason to do so, it does speed it up some. Nothing major but every bit helps.

I am able to get 1.8ghz stable with FetFSB on the 720QM

I think the overclock is limited by the RAM or by something else in the system not the cpu in any way shape or form, I would say I know this but I have no way to prove it really.

But keep that in mind when overclocking via SetFSB that your raising the core speed of the system not just the cpu speed so it ups RAM speed and other things as well.

Read doom9.org and doom10.org. Video encoding is mostly self taught is you are planning to use the free encoders. Those communities provide a ton of resources and in general frown on questions that are answered among the provided material. May even get banned if you post stupid questions that are already answered. Put it this way, they are the opposite of NBR, they tolerate harsh responses as the mods are harsh, but unlike NBR, stupid questions aren't tolerated.

But it's worth it and best resources out there. Doom10 is more friendly than Doom9.

FYI if you hang out in Doom9, don't mention anything that my be pirated or you will be banned.

I can teach you its easy. First pay 5 dollars for the upgraded version of setfsb. Select the G73JH Clock Gen and hit Get Fsb. Slowly raise it to oc your fsb.

I use AMD GPU Clock Tool to oc my card. I still have yet to try overclocking my system using the newer bios and vbios as my system runs great as it is. I also re-pasted my cpu and gpu so my temps are better and I can get more overclock out of my components before the failsafe turns them off.

what about rivatuna? :p is that a program to oc too? i get good game play, but the only reason i wanna oc is cos i feel as if my laptop hasn't reach it's potential. (it hangs. programs doesn't respond. etc)

    Thread resurrection time! :D

OK, so I'm waiting on my SetFSB ID from the guy in Japan and I've been looking through various threads. Some newb questions:

    - If I just move the slider step by step, roughly how far can I go before treading into dangerous territory? 5 notches? 25 notches?

    - What sort of numbers should I be looking out for in the green box? Anyone have some 'safe' numbers that will be a real benefit over these multiplier issues everyone keeps talking about?

    - Speaking of multipliers, do I have to make any changes?

    - Any other useful information?

    Many thanks in advance! :)

You can't change the max multiplier on an i7-720/740qm so you don't have to touch them.

Don't forget to apply the windows timing fix before you OC using SetFSB

I looked for the Windows timing fix in the sticky and Chastity's driver resource but didn't find anything. Is this a patch of some sort? Where can I find it?
