    Alright here is something.

We use FN+ what ever key (forgot not in from of laptop) to control the volume.

    Ok, normal.

Well, I use a usb headset sometimes and when in game I would love to control the volume with this feature. Problem is, it ONLY controls the volume on the speaker and not any other device. ??

Yes it will totally work when I do that, but thats annoying.

On my older gateway 7805u, the volume slider controlled the volume of the ENTIRE machine where as the G73 only does it on the default audio device.

Has anyone found a way around this?

Unfortunately, that's the only choice, since the Fn keys only affect the "Speakers" playback device.

From the OS, disabling the "Speakers" device (which forces the headset to be the default) disables the Fn hotkeys. Really poor implementation on Asus' part...

Wait... You expect your G73 laptop Fn controls to control the volume on your USB device?

Having the notebook control your other device defeats the whole purpose of having an external sound source.

    I expect that.

I'm using Windows 7. All sound is handled through Windows 7 (it's unlikely any general software writes directly to hardware anymore, even if it could). The ATK package is using the OS sound APIs - I can tell - the volume control for the speaker device moves when using the hotkeys. There's no reason (beyond poor implementation) for the hotkeys not to control configured sound playback devices. My external keyboard does it just fine. Only the Asus software does it poorly and/or not at all.

Maybe I'm just biased since I've been doing multimedia programming since the days we had to program the SoundBlaster directly :)

Exactly. I do expect the volume control on a device to control the volume of anything. My last 3 laptops did this with the digital control.

You move the volume control, it controls the volume on the laptop, no matter what.

Im blaming bad implementation of the ASUS software.
