    G73 rear fan question

    Hey guys,

    Am I the only one that seems to notice how the right-side (screen facing you) rear fan seems to blow a little harder, and a little warmer than the left one? Is it just because certain high-temperature components run hotter closer to the right fan?

    OR, am I just an exception, and everyone else's G73s are running equally on both rear fans lol. Maybe I'm just too observant with stupid things when I get a new, (expensive) toy, but I am just making sure there is no problems with the left fan -- it does blow, just not quite as forcefully as the right back fan. Overall, the fans are pitch silent, and neither blows THAT forcefully even in long gaming sessions, definitely a nice feat of engineering.

    The right fan cools the graphics card, the left fan, the CPU. When I run apps that are more CPU intensive, the left fan will blow harder. Gaming, the right (GPU) will blow more hot air. Nothing like my old HP P4 zd8000, though. It's now used as a hand dryer in the bathroom.

    Reminds me of tuning a motorcycle, where you would cup your hand in front of the exhaust pipe to check if each cylinder was running the same. ;)

    Your observations are normal. LOL

    Read some of the stuff in the battery life thread, the 5870 stays at maximum clock even if it's not doing 3d (there is a manual solution)

    The right side is the CPU.

    Yep, we've both taken the G73JH apart and can confirm the right side is the CPU.

    The problem is, you both took the G73JH apart and in doing so had the G73 turned around. With the G73 sitting assembled and in front of you, the CPU is on the left side.

    Need something a little more solid? Here is an image from David's Asus G73 Series Disassembly Guide thread. Notice that the GPU is on the left side when it is upside down. Turn it right side up, and the GPU would move to the right. Making the heat coming out of the left vent, the CPU.

    Fact, not opinion, looking at laptop from the front, the CPU/exhaust/heatsink is on left...the GPU on the right....you guys should be able to figure this out merely from noticing which gets hotter/blows harder during gaming...9.5/10 times its the GPU.....on the right ; )

    The GPU is absolutely on the right side (if you're looking from the front).

    Running CPU stress tests rev up the left fan, and running benchmarks or overclocking the 5870 rev up the right one.

    My G73 started chirping, it wasn't frozen but when I clicked shut down it didn't seem to do anything. After a hard turn-off and a restart, it is working perfectly with no chirp.

    The type of chirp was electronic, and was once every half second. I wonder what it could have been....

    When the screen is facing you, the GPU is on the right, but facing the fans it's on your left. When you take it apart, have to flip the entire interior over, it's on your right. It's a bit confusing.

    I believe GPU run hotter because they simply have more cores. 800 Stream Processors vs 4 Cores on the i7. Also believe intel is just better at designing their processors which is why I look forward to an x86 GPGPU based graphics solution from Intel. 778 transistors vs 1 billion for the HD5870 also.

    The biggest reason the GPU fan blows harder on idle is because even on the battery saving mode where the core clock is down clocked from 700 MHz to 300 MHz the GDDR5 memory keeps running on 1000 MHz. GDDR5 uses a lot of energy and therefore produces a lot of heat.

    With the AMD GPU Clock tool I found out that if they would downclock it to 200 MHz Core and 200 MHz memory the fan profile can be changed so the fan doesn't have to blow that hard at idle.

    I have a support call with Asus about this. They have sent my observations and results to the BIOS team but I wonder if they can fix this. I'm getting more and more the feeling that either the Catalyst drivers are borked or the hardware is borked. It might just be they made it this way because there is an issue.

    I'm using AMD clock to set the core n GDDR5 frequency...
    Seems like moment I step it down to 200Hz of GDDR5 my laptop freezes.
    I have to hard reset it!

    probably because ur card can't take it. Mine acts weird when its 150/300 so i just stick with 250/500... vBIOS on G73 isn't that good.
