I was using the screen yesterday without problems while I was visiting a few friends.

Today I turned the NB on and noticed that the screen stays black, however the backlight is being turned on. When I use the FN+F8 button to change the ASUS screen setting its also turning the backlight off and on.

So basically the screen seems to be working but is getting no input signal anymore for unknown reasons, any idea how to debug it?

I'm writing this post currently from the notebook, so it is fully functional apart of the screen.

I am on almost the same issue as you. I got almost the same issue on G75. I hope you get it solved so I can too. From what I can understand, it's the LCD cable, LVDS, issue. Check if you put the laptop to sleep and wake it up, the screen flashes white. I am getting this. And external works fine. Also check if the internal display is being picked up in Windows. Go to desktop and right click then Screen Resolution. Or use AMD's or Nvidia's control panels.

When you turned it on, did you see BIOS splash screen at all?
If not, then I think it could be a screen problem, or LVDS problem.

Kevin is spot on, ASUS G73J G73JH laptop screen replacement procedure - YouTube try disassembly then clean + reseat the LVDS cable (and verify that it is not pinched). Just curious have you ever updated the VBIOS ?
Also it could try removing all power sources, then press and hold reset pinhole for 15 seconds, release, then retry cold boot.

Well I didn't had any time yet to open the NB, I wonder though why the cable would be suddenly broken and not working anymore at least partially.

Yes I see the internal screen under windows and can even move the mouse on the "dead screen", I tried already FN+F7 and FN+F8 but it doesn't helps apart of enabling/disabling the backlight.

I flashed 2-3 years ago the modded vBIOS and 1 1/2 years~ ago the modded BIOS, don't think it is related with that. I do hear some strange sound when I switch through the screens but also that is probably not related.

I only suggested opening up because the cable is routed very close to where the hinge area is and may have worked loose (especially if you open and close it often). If you end up replacing the panel (just my guess) check out the return policy especially if you are finicky (like me) about bad pixels. I just got one of these B173HW01 V4 Datasheet download - Panelook.com (~100 US) + am happy with it. (only 1 bad pixel)
I have never noticed any noise from mine using Fn+ F7 or F8 . Hope this helps

Yep, notebooks are moved around often have tend to have a greater variance in temperature causing thermal creep on cables.
