Hi there-
I recently purchased a G73, with one of the HDDs swapped out for an intel SSD. The laptop seems to be vibrating. Not enough to have it move on a table, but if you rest your hands on it you can definitely feel it. Type on it for a long period of time, its gets a bit frustrating. Is this normal behavior? Something that can be easily fixed?
It does seem to stop after a couple of hours, but I havent been able to tell any difference in my activity that might lead to that.
Thanks.

Maybe it's the fans? Other than that, not much can make a laptop shake other than excessive bass.
-
Could be the fans, the subwoofer or simply your other HDD spinning. Regardless nothing to worry about.
-
Its a bit of a worry, I cant write on my laptop for very long without it getting very distracting.
Its not the subwoofer, I have the sound muted. Not sure how to determine whether its the fan or the HDD, can HDDs be parked anymore?
Does anyone else have this problem? Is this something that you could take your computer into Asus to fix under warranty? -
-
Maybe you're just annoyed by it only because of the prolonged hand placement on it.
Either that or you have super-sensitive spidey palms. -
No, its not just me. Others feel it too, even at the first touch.
Has anyone dealt with Asus support in the US before? Does it take long? -
I understand it started when you installed the SSD.
Take the SSD out, stick it in a different laptop and see what happens.
As far as I know there are two bays for hard drives in G73s. Swap your SSD with the other drive or move it to the other bay. It could be that something with the construction of the bay it's sitting in right now is causing vibration. -
G73JW-A1 - vibration
Same problem here. Just bought it a few days ago. I can't work on its keyboard for more than 1-2 hrs. It gives me a headache. Also, if left on my desk, from time to time the vibration is sent to the desk and then it creates a very annoying environment. I tried to put it on a soft area but if kept on my lap, I still can feel that weird vibration.
We paid ~$1,850 and to be honest I was expected to get a better machine for the money.
Besides the fact that it has a 1.5GB graphics card, when I connect an external monitor to it, the image is blurry when move stuff around (scroll up and down).
I will send it back for a full refund. -
The only moving part that can cause vibration is the Drive bay, that spins enough to cause vibration, not the HDD much less the SDD,
When I installed Roxio on my computer, the drive bays used to spin a little longer which was quite noticeable. get rid of any CD/DVD or BR you left and see if there is any difference. -
I'm getting the same vibration issues. I have bad wrists as it is, but if i type on this machine for more than 10 or 15 minutes my hands hurt a lot. I don't have this issue with various other laptop's i've used. Has anyone else experienced this or resolved it? I've contacted Asus but no response yet. I'm thinking it's the CPU fan, and the vibration may be carrying through the chassis due to it being fairly cheaply built. I may just have to sell it and go with an (overpriced) Alienware to get the same performance :-\
It does seem to lessen after it's been on for a bit (an hour or so), though this could just be my imagination. -
If you PERSONALLY swapped in the Intel X25 drive, then I suggest you disable the mechanical hard drive by removing it temporarily and use that as a way to test the vibration source. See if the vibration persists after removing one of the very likely culprits. If the vibration is still there, then you've narrowed the possible sources down to the disc drive or the fans. If there's no disc in the optical drive, then you know it's something to do with the fans since the optical drives in laptops should not be capable of shaking your laptop without a disc in the drive.
If the vibration is MIA with the mechanical hard drive missing, then you know its your mechanical hard drive.
Just as a point of reference, vibration that bothers me with laptops usually comes from the optical drive, though the case may be different with your particular laptop. This is why I don't typically leave a disc in my computer unless I absolutely have to. Imo, I won't miss optical discs when they go away forever.
Hope it helps. Seems obvious. If it is your fans, you should probably try to RMA it or warranty repair it if the vibration is bad enough that you notice it. -
I contacted Asus last week on this on the 3/2, they still haven't gotten back to me. Disappointed with the service so far.

If you contacted them via email expect it to take a few days. It's better to call them by phone.

Well it's like any call center, there are plenty of tired overworked people at those phones. Just call back until it works out with someone. Good luck.

You can always ask for a supervisor.

So, I have an N73, not a G73, but I certainly have been getting a freaky vibe as well. After some experimentation, I only notice the vibe when moving my body (eg finger) against any metal portion of the notebook. Holding a finger statically against the metal, or moving it against plastic has no effect. At least it doesn't for me.
And the weirdest thing? I had someone touch a metal section of the notebook with their right hand (without moving), and then I stroked their left hand, and I could feel the same vibration! But only when moving! The vibration is actually passing through the body. I'm a bit freaked, to tell the truth, but still using the notebook. As a touch typist, I keep my wrists pretty firmly placed on the notebook, so it doesn't bother me during normal use.
