Is there anyway to turn on backlit keyboard during the login screen?
I really need it.![]()
Thanks

Lee-, Good question, but the answer is no. A man who knows more than I has already answered this:
If one knew how to modify the BIOS this could be done -
actually the answer is yes. i have gotten the backlit keyboard to come on many times at the login screen.

Did you tweak something to have those kb lights work on log-on screen? I've noticed mine doesn't turn on too on log-on screen, just after logging in then it turns on. -
nope, i havent done anything to my laptop. it just turns on sometimes, not quite sure how i do it. sometimes itll light up when i start typing and sometimes it doesnt.

If the computer is coming back from being in sleep mode or hybernation, the backlight will come on. If the computer is coming up from a cold boot state, the keyboard light won't come on until you are in Windows. A user here in the forums reported that with Linux installed (Ubuntu 10.04 I think) it is in fact on before you log in.
I have tried several things to try and get it to come on before I log in. I have never found anything that worked. Specifically I tried making the ATK services load at boot time instead of login. Like I said, I never had any luck with it. -
that makes sense, cuz i usually dont shut down my laptop I just close the lid most of the time

I can confirm that the keyboard backlight comes on almost instantly in Linux. This doesn't help you windows users though, it must be late in the boot process or early after logon.

At the risk of sounding like a snob ... what's wrong with touch typing? Maybe this is encouragement to find your home row keys.
-
if youre in the dark, it makes it easier to find home row
-
Yeah, that would be a problem if the f and j keys didn't feel different.
-
Hence his suggestion to learn touch typing. There are physical marks on the F & J keys to help position your hands without looking at the keyboard.
Not that I know I do touch type. Back in the stone ages when I went to school typing was only taught to girls since no many would ever need the skill.
--- Who knew!

So what's the point of having a backlit keyboard if we are just going to do that?
One question: What app/services/drives which makes the backlit work? -
Yes, why do we have unnecessary things that make things easier?
-
I'm a good touch typist but my usual password is very difficult and has lots of special characters in it. I have a difficult time hitting the right symbols with my hands over the home row. When I try I usually type my password wrong. I just fold the screen forward a little when I log in. I don't really need to see the whole thing. I just need to see the zero or one key so I can mentally index to the right symbols. I'm weird... I know.
-
I can touch type just fine, but my password contains a few numbers and sometimes its hard to find those numbers without actually looking at them.
-
Yup, it's true - numbers are hard to hit on the g73. I don't know what sort of situation you're in that you've got your windows password on, though. Although I can imagine some situations where it is important ... I can't imagine places where it is important enough *and* is frequently dark enough to merit requiring the backlight keyboard.
... though I did read of a really easy mod that hijacks some of the juice from the usb hub to provide backlighting on a ul30 that didn't otherwise have a backlight keyboard. -
Got a link for that?
-
I stand corrected- this can be done Kudos to Atilla

Wait about 5 seconds before you try to login.
