Just wanted to make sure this is something anyone can reproduce. If I set my Power4Gear on quiet office with processor maximum @ 100% and processor minimum @ something less than 15 or 20%, then when I do a reboot, either the Asus splash screen will have a momentary psod, or sometimes the login screen will have it too. Try a couple of reboots just to be sure. I can get this result predictably with these settings.
If this is predictable behavior on any G73, I wonder if this is bad for the GPU. I noticed in HwinInfo, that setting p4g like this will lower the freq to about 25%, while leaving the setting at High Performance will keep the freqs about full 100%
At the high performance settings, the power brick gets pretty hot, as the processor is consuming its maximum 45 Watts, but at the quiet office setting, the proc is using only about 19 Watts, and the power brick just gets warm.
So it seems like what I have to do is set p4g at High performance before logging off, but once I'm logged in, and not doing anything more than ordinary office tasks, I can reset to Quiet office. But this seems kind of troublesome.
I would like to be able to find settings that will allow my G73 to boot up normally without momentary psods and yet maintain the quiet office settings that use less power.
Any thoughts![]()

I haven't tested this since going to 209 and Ziddy's vBIOS (as I only use Quiet Office when I'm in the office) but this has not been an issue for me. I usually only use those settings when I'm in the field and don't go until next month, but I can say that I use them a lot and will often leave it on Quiet Office and haven't seen that.

Hello. I use windows 7 power management and shift all the time beetwen balanced where proc min is 5% and max 100%. And have started at least 100 times already with balanced profile and never experienced such problem.
-
And really I dont understand why asus come with this power for gear thing when is all they do is to use originally power management from windows and changed profile names. Anyone?
-
I agree, that is why after removing trend AV, power 4 gear was next to go. I am no expert, but I think I can set up a power plan for my needs based on the standard win 7 options. And I have ATI powerplay and AMD clock tool for further customizations when needed. Plus the excellent advice available throughout this forum on downclocking, etc.

I would start with the potentially display-related power settings - turn off the PCI link state power management and turn off ATI PowerPlay...

Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions! I disabled ATI powerplay, and PCI link state pm. and can keep quiet office @ 10% minimum processor state and everything seems to be going smoothly. I'm going to keep playing around with the settings to see if there is some one setting that causes the problem.
Just for some background, at one point I had installed Catalyst CC 10.6, but had problems, so uninstalled, did driver sweeper etc., and reinstalled stock drivers from Asus. CCC now says: Catalyst Control Center Version 2009.1217.1632.29627 and Driver Packaging version: 8.683-091217a-092929C So I thought everything was rolled back correctly. But now I am wondering if maybe there is still some 10.6 stuff lingering, but not visible. -
<10.6 component> You'll never find me!! MUAAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
OK, I've been playing too much Overlord. Damn you Steam! -

it should get quirky whenever the vRAM timings change.

I am currently able to reboot and power up with no screen corruptions with the quiet office setting with 6% minimum proc. and 100% max. proc. which I couldn't do just yesterday. Props to Mark S!
By disabling powerplay in CCC and turning off the PCI link state power management, things are acting cool again whenever I bootup or restart.
I still have to be sure the problem is fixed under all conditions before I go about seeing what setting is actually causing the problem though. But I will post when I find out.
DCx: Are you using p4g? What setting is on when you boot up? What about the other settings I mentioned? If you are using only Windows power management, what settings for proc. and PCI link state power management?
Chastity: I think the evil invisible 10.6 component may be losing its power over my G73! HAHAHAHAHAHHAH -
-
The startup flicker is from the memory clock changing.
-
Just following up on op. I have re-enabled CCC powerplay and the G73 continues to remain stable with no momentary psods. The only thing left to set to bring things back to a state where I had the m-psods is to re-enable the PCI link state pm. I'm going to wait a few more days however, and be sure things are still bullet proof, with no anomolies under these settings.

Make sure you don't step on the legacy 10.6 component.
