I realize you cannot upgrade the GPU because Asus has soldered it onto the mother board. But I am just curious if anyone knows if you can upgrade the CPU and if so has anyone seen any problems with over heating or anything when they did it. I would like to upgrade to an i7 900 series if possible.

If anyone has already done this, let me know if they see a big difference or if its even worth the time. Just curious what others think.

you probably gonna have improvement in bad optimized games and in heavy cpu dependent game (examples: CoD BO for un-optimized ones, Starcraft or supreme commander for heavy CPU ones.)

    My opinion:

Only worthy if you can get the CPU and the swap operation at low cost, also I think that having such CPU (like the 940qe) may ends up generating a GPU bottleneck for the system with the future games... that's only my idea though, and mostly relevant for game only, if you do video editing or other stuffs you WILL se an improvement.

I would just save my money and be ready for the future 28nm CPU&GPU notebooks.

My sig. 920XM purchase has a ton of information and discussion which led to me buying mine. Its all about Throttlestop to get these babies running as they should read through the thread and you will understand what you expect and get from researching before you purchase.

With ICD and stock cooling running 4 cores at full load stressed produces around 90oC at 2.8Ghz with no throttling which requires around 80/65 TDP/TDC for me. You can have it running at 3.2ghz+ over all 4 cores if you are just using it for light loads etc but you will need to raise the power I need a good 95watt running through it to get it that high and I have an SF Storm + Air conditioner to keep it below 90oc :) Currently I run 1 core at 3.8ghz 2 cores at 3.6ghz and 3 or 4 cores at 3.2ghz with my extra cooling and its fantastic after lots of testing these are my most stable. I can push Twin Turbo on you achieve 4ghz but that just gets a little too unstable and scary on the temps.

These things are amazing and beastly as you will see from my sig post people swear by them and I will be uploading new benchmarks tonight as I lost them when I recently got banned ''cough cough'' but I can confirm I have already seen 16k+ in 3Dmark06 and 10500+ in Vantage along with a nice boost in 3DMark11.

They are really only worth it price vs power if you can get a good one for the price you pay and I went for the QS to save costs and its been fantastic no problems at all buying from Laptop Monkey from ebay are $300.

Compare the 1.6ghz over 4 cores the 720qm produces and you will see a performance boost even if it really only shows in CPU intensive games/tasks I generally see faster installations and much more stable FPS.

The GPU is not soldered to the mobo as you mentioned Tijo did significant testing with a 6970M but sadly it resulted in pain and agony so more testing is needed. Hold off and go for the XM model they are the best upgrade you can get next to an SSD and since when did not needing an upgrade stop anyone from still buying it!! :notworthy:

Dallers, stop making overclocking and components swapping looking as easy as drinking water,
I remember you that I live just a couple of flying hours away from you, so I am considering the idea of shipping you money, g73 and cpu for a custom made upgrade,
Woul you refuse such an easy job? :D

I dont need money pay for postage and send me what needs doing and it will be returned in Factory condition.

I would probably pay you for the chance to upgrade something I am getting twitchy again already :D

This man suffered months of having to listen to me and also went through hours of questioning worse than the FBI would have put him through.

I followed his advice and I no longer need central heating.

    XM is the truth! :D
