I'm currently trying to hook up a second monitor to my G73 and having some issues. It's an older Dell SP2009W that I have been running on my old Dell Inspiron 6400 for a couple years. On that machine, I was running it at its max resolution and refresh rate of 1680x1050 at 60Hz. However, when I plug it into the Asus I get 1600x1200 at 60Hz as a possibility, and then some lower resolutions. It doesn't even list 1680x1050 as an option although it does in List All Modes on the primary laptop screen, so the card is obviously capable. Even when I choose to uncheck modes this monitor can't display in an attempt to "force" the resolution, the best option I get is 1680x1050 at 30Hz. I'm currently running at 1440x900 at 60Hz as it's the highest option available but it looks like crap.

So, any suggestions on what I should do? The monitor is capable as proven on my other machine and has the right drivers, so it seems the limitation is on the 5870. This concerns me, especially because I have a new 23" monitor on its way that supports much higher resolutions. I would hate to have spent the money only to learn this card is incapable of output at high resolution due to software limitations. Since I know this card is capable, I was really hoping I could extend my desktop at high resolution like I did on my ancient machine. Seems a new model with a high end card should be able to do it, but maybe it's a limitation in the driver?

I'm using the stock 10.1 drivers until the new 10.8 and vBios comes out. Maybe that will provide me a solution. For now, does anyone have any ideas? Is anyone else currently using a second monitor and able to set high resolutions and refresh rates on it? It's unfortunate that Omega doesn't do his drivers anymore. That's what I had for my X1300 and it made that card far easier to work with than this one. Everything unlocked, just up to you to find the optimal mode.

Your Dell monitor and your G73 have different aspect ratios (i.e Dell: 16:10 and the G73: 16:9). Hence, to enable extended desktop, the GPU forces compatibility by brining the monitor resolution down to 1440: 900 (i.e. 16:9) ratio.

So I hope for your sake the new 23" that you've order comes in a 16:9 aspect ratio, which will complement the 1920 * 1080 resolution of the G73.
