I have experienced your situation after I cleaned my G73 with air-can on its vents, it is late when I've realized that I should have opened and pulled out the DVD drive so dust won't be easily blown into the lens.

During that time, it's very picky when to read and sometimes doesn't read the same DVD/CD. So I cleaned the lens with a clean microfiber and cleaning solution (iKlear in my case) and right after doing so, it instantly became able to read all of my DVDs/CDs that it had problems with.
