When I was researching this laptop in December, I was reading about people having problems with their fans not turning on after updating their graphics drivers, causing massive heating problems until the drivers were reverted.

I was wondering if this is still a problem or if I can go ahead and download the updated drivers for the new games that are coming out. Thanks.

Well you can always update the drivers and if you do have issues then revert back. It will take a little work but its doable. Since you have the JH model i'd actually suggest keeping the drivers you're on now as there are several unstable driver versions out there. If you're working good now, i'd keep it as it is to avoid any potential problems

I haven't even heard of this issue. The majority of the users here update the graphics drivers regularly with no such issues.

^^^^ That (Overheat) is a new issue to me. If you are on stock drivers and want to update you will need to update the VBIOS first. There are detailed instructions in another thread started by Gary Key. I recommend the VBIOS under beta from here G73/74/53 Series Driver and Application Reference
but as Hutsady said if games run ok you do not have to change anything.

I would update the drivers for the performance boost they provide in certain games if you play those.

That isn't very thorough research if I might add.

Worst research story I've heard related to G73JH since this NEVER HAPPENED. No driver has ever caused the fans to stop working since the fans are controlled by the BIOS.

Dunno how it works on laptop, but dont forget about the infamous 197.13 nvidia drivers.
They totally disabled the fans in thar driver causing alot of gpu-frying. It made some big mess in the gaming community with thousand of 8800gt smoking out and dyeing due to excessive overheat.
So I don't think thar fans relies totally on bios...drivers does their part as well. At least on nvidia.

Apples to Oranges. I've never read on NBR of an NBR user claiming their GPU fan stopped working with drivers. Those horror stories were from desktop users where the vBIOS controls the fans on the desktop cards.

The only way drivers have any impact on fans on G73JH is if the drivers have higher GPU load for certain games leading to higher temperatures causing the fans to go on faster. AMD Catalyst software doesn't even read the fan speed and fan useage since again, it's not being controlled by the vBIOS but by the BIOS.

Well I'm not experienced in amd laptop cards, I only had one for just 3 months, always being a green guy.
Good to know man, thanks. Everything makes experience.

Yep, the Bios is what controls the fans, not the vBios for certain. If you want an accurate fan reading on the G73, you have to read it from the Embedded Controller, not the vBios. I suppose this is the reason why most monitoring software isn't capable of measuring the fan speed for the GPU on the G73. Only HWiNFO32/64 can since code was added specifically for the G73.

Where did you read that? I'm interested to see what the *real* problem was, because no one here seems to have heard of it - and we've heard of most things...
