My G73JH came with the 1.3meg webcam, and I'm wondering how easy/straightforward it would be, to upgrade this to the 2.0meg camera.

    Any insight, thoughts or suggestions?

How do you know which one you have? Would the disassembly guide have the tear down instructions you need.

    Cheers,

You can find out which cam you have, through device manager.

I've looked at the disassembly guide, and I'm hoping I can get to the cam without having to disassemble the whole chassis.

Also, wondering if it'll be a direct swap.

Thanks, I see this X2 has the 2.0 version, not that it matters to me since I've never used the camera on any of my Macs or PCs. If you could buy the exact model being installed in these, it stands to reason that a direct swap could work.

    Cheers,

I Have taked out my webcam and you need only to unscrew two screws on bottom of your screen and there are some hinges around which holds frame in place. After that you are just to unplug connector from camera module and exchange it with new one. I wouldnt recommend you chickony 7242 2.0 webcam though because mine died after only one week :(. But maybe its just mine or does anyone else haved problems with webcam on their g73.

I have the Chicony 2.0 Webcam and have no issues. Did you try reinstalling the driver? The correct driver is 7246, not 7242. The 7129 is for the 1.3 MP Webcam.

Hello. I Have tried them all. But my problem is camera begun to disapear after two weeks from device manager. And it will just popp like new unknown device and windows could not found any driver automatically. I have tried all possible drivers from chickony but got mossage like this driver is not right for device. And eventualy it died completely. I have tried to connect it to other pc after i taked it out it uses usb interface but it was not even detected at all.

I'm curious about the drivers available on the G73JH-specific download site, since none of them apply to what was sent with mine. I'm also surprised any models really come with a 1.3MP camera when all Asus specs I've seen specifically state 2.0MP...

    Anyway, mine shows as

    USB 2.0 2.0M UVC WebCam
    Chicony, (Sonix260)

    Driver info:
    Sonix
    6/5/2009
    61.5.200.270

This driver is available on the Asus download site using the search criteria Product: Notebook, Series: Drivers, Models: Camera.

Could be worth a try. There's also newer versions listed there, but I'm still just using what came on the driver disk.

Yeah my was all the same as yours. But damn thing beginned to act strange after only 10 days. I have removed it from my pc now and looking for replacement on internet. Dont vant to send it to asus service :) because I`m blessed that I havent had gsod and other things gpu related not once. So If I had to choose something to die on me I would choose webcam :).

Yep, the G73JH download area doesn't have the same file as the one on the disc.

The Best Buy model had to cut corners some place. ;)

With the exception of the "Chicony, (Sonix260)" line, everything else is the same here in Device Manager.

There are 4 archives that all have the same version number as the one you listed above. One of the four versions says it's for the (7129) 1.3 MP camera, so lets exclude that one. What we have left are the following:

    Camera_Chicony_7246_Vista64_Win7_64_615200270
    Camera_Chicony_8156_WIN7_64_z0615005200270
    Camera_Chicony_WIN7_64_061005200270

Here's where I think it gets a little interesting. Keep in mind that the 7246 number comes from the "Driver and Utility" disc. Also, keep in mind that I did not include the 7246 archive from the 'ASUS G73JH download area' in the guide because it's different. I now think I know why.

The above 7246 archive is different than the one supplied on the disc, as mentioned before that was completely expected. However, the bottom two archives are exactly the same. They are also exactly the same as the supplied driver on the disc.

The correct driver for the Chicony 2.0 MP webcam is 8156, and not 7246. I've double checked this, but I'd appreciate it if someone else could also check.

The driver disc version seems to work fine here and I see (pun intended) no reason to update it at this time.

Didn't they save enough leaving out the drivers and utilities disk? :)

I downloaded the drivers from the same place that post #8 says they are located. Go there.
