    Hey guys,

Just seemed to notice this on my G73JH. i7-720qm, 8GB RAM, 5870m, 1080p display. Wherever there's a grey area it's sort of grainy/noisy. This is on the 'normal' splendid mode. Some modes exhibit this less than others. It shows up worse at an angle. Is it a software or hardware issue? Anyone else have experience with something like this?

    Thanks.

I get that sometimes too. Not really sure what causes it, but consensus seems to be its the actual display.

I don't seem to be getting it. Though my screen is 1600x900.

Some of the G73 screens have the grainy effect.

what you're seeing s dithering which is due to the fact that this is a 6bit screen.
apparently some screens have it more that others and it's more on some splendid modes coz it worsens when screen brightness is increased beyond normal..

for best results just keep it at the normal mode, and improve colour quality by increasing saturation in the CCC.
Also, make sure panel brightness is not more than 100 in the CCC

I see... all I can see is adjustments for gamma, brightness, and contrast. I don't think the video section will affect regular desktop viewing. Maybe I'm in the wrong area?

you need to goto the Mybuilt in display>diplay colour if you're using the new CCC

in the old one, goto Diplays(i think) then right click on the laptop screen shown at the bottom and click adjust

They all have it if you really focus and have sharp vision. It's normal and cannot be seen unless you look for it. A lot of TVs have this too. Unfortunately, once you see it you cannot unsee it :p. It cannot be noticed during work or gameplay though so it's alright.

    I have CCC 10.11. Not sure I follow :(

It seems to be worse at certain times more than others. Maybe it's just me.

Well just make sure you're not using any splendid mode
and then try changing some settings in the CCC
Select Desktops & Displays, in the upper section of that selection there's your desktop(s), on lower section the actual display - right click on display & select configure

make sure brightness is not higher than 100, dry reducing it a bit to see if the grainy appearance improves.

    use this page to test
Black level - Lagom LCD test

right now i can see the dithering on boxes 1 and 2 if i pay real close attention.
till which box is it noticeable in yours?

btw you can read the explanation on the page for why it happens, since ours is a 6bit display it cannot display all 256 shades per pixel and in order to show those shades it sorta mixes the colours from two adjacent pixels which causes the grainy appearance.
this mostly happen on near-perfect black shades

I can see a little in almost every box as well. Thanks for the help, I'll try those adjustments out and see what happens.

thanks for all of the help. in lieu of starting a new thread, I'd like to just bumo this one up and ask --

it seems that I've lost the light bar under my LCD. my keyboard is still lit, all other blue lights are present, but the light bar just stopped working. it doesn't come on when I turn the computer on/off. Any ideas here? TIA.

tried using the lighting button to try and switch it on? (the 1st on the left next to the turbo and splendid buttons)

If yes and it doesnt work, then i think its a hardware fault coz AFAIK the lightbar is on in DOS and doesnt require any drivers to operate. If you can, you might wanna open up your bezel and check the connector

Thanks for the link Kurt, I can see all the boxes, but while on that page in full screen I toggled through all the splendid modes and IE 8 crashed.
I am on stock video driver and VBIOS. Can some with the same config please try this? (IE does not crash if I am on NBR for example) Thanks, J
