I feel like such a noob for asking this  but can someone please instruct me in the full, complete, and correct process of installing the 10.3 driver? I tried installing it over the stock one (because that process worked on my last laptop) and it just resulted in a GSOD. I've searched this forum for answers, but all I can find are scattered suggestions. Do I need to remove the old driver? How should I do so? Anything else I should know? Thanks, I greatly appreciate it.

I haven't updated the cats, still using 9.12. However, if I was going to update them, I would most certainly uninstall the old ones first. I know, I know, I've heard it a thousand times before that you don't need to, but I do it anyway. AMD has the complete instructions for updating cats on their website. Just make sure you download the correct package.

Thanks for the input, Kalim. You said you were using 9.12, which is probably what I'm using, but how can I find and confirm this number? And I know for sure I have the right package. Finally, on a side note, I was mainly interested in updating the drivers because the gameplay seems to almost stutter in some games, like HAWX. I ran a benchmark and got 195 fps max and 50 fps average, which was great, but the actual performance didn't seem 100% smooth. Any one else experiencing this?

As you may or may not know, AMD usually releases new versions near the middle of the month. So, to see which version you are using do the following:

    1. Hold down the Win key and press the Pause key (Win+Pause).
    2. Select 'Device Manager' in left column.
    3. Go into 'Display adapters' and then double-click 'ATI mobility Radeon HD 5870'.
    4. Select the 'Driver' tab.
If you see a 'Driver Date' of 200 9- 12-17 then you have 9.12 Cats.

    I don't know.
