Not quite sure where this goes, but run into a problem with catalyst drivers for the 5870m on my G73JH.

Sitting at 12.1 right now after trying to upgrade to 12.4, then .3 then .2 and back to .1 because if I uninstall the old drivers and install (full cats OR just drivers it does not matter) I either get the horrible resolution of 1440x700 something, or "catalyst could find no hardware".

Anyone have this problem? Is it related to the Overdrive bios mod from long ago, or is there another problem lurking about?

    1. Uninstall CCC completely in the control panel uninstallation facility.
    2. Right click my computer, device Manager, display adaptor, right click 5870M adaptor and select uninstall and tick to delete software.
    3. Run drivesweeper or ccleaner and remove all remaining ATI files. (should be done in safe mode) I never do however.
    4. Restart
    5. It will confirm ''Installing Standard VGA adaptor'' upon restart.
    6. Install the complete 12.4 package from scratch and it will confirm you need to restart once done.

Except for #3, I did all that repeatedly (up and down the chain .2 <-->.4) and
no go, but I'll give the CC thing a shot (could not hurt).

Worst case, still got a system image before messing with it and moving to a
    hybrid drive.

(Off topic: 2+ minute boot time to desktop + 20'ish seconds to be usable to
45 seconds flat and ready to rock...highly recommended)

Oh yes have you updated the Vbios?

In regards to your hybrid boot time comment you should have a taste of a SATA III SSD :) 20 seconds and I am fully booted gadgets/software the lot on my HyperX ;)

You want fast, 15 secs windows 8 on a 64GB SSD on SATA II to login screen from power on. :p Anyways, hybrids are slow compared to SSDs even on SATA II, on SATA III, you can shave off a few secs, but any SSD will feel snappy.

As for the rest, pretty much all has been said, vbios up to date and once that's confirmed or updated, clean install of the drivers.

Yeah how much software and programs are we talking here Tijo not a Windows 8 factory reset I hope :D especially with that silly touch startup screen that it comes with ;) I have around 20 gadgets and at least 10 programs starting from loadup.

Bloody Clevo as well has a stupid BIOS screen totally unnecessary!

Lol, relatively clean install, windows 8, Asus ATK Package, nVidia drivers, AV and one or two other thing. 48 processes currently running so yeah clean. Still, for a SSD on SATA II it's still impressive considering the POST takes a good 7 secs. That is on my N50 by the way. I see what you mean though, of course your Clevo is faster on SATA III, but 15 secs, would be 18 to browser without a password probably is pretty darn impressive for an old laptop. Try windows 8 on your Clevo though and you'll be laughing at the speeds, if you have a spare SSD lying around, it's worth a try.

Just been having this convo on the M11x forum some chap is looking to buy an SSD. Since my M4 decided to burn out on my after only two weeks (I still seem to the be the only person on the planet this happened to). I switched back to my old Kingston slow coach that I had in my JH apart from actual read and writes with files I can see no difference at all really maybe 25-30 second boot with all my crap I have installed it really is down to having an SSD than not having one. Raid 0 SATA III I am considering however in the big boy :)

I tried Windows 8 it looked so much like Apple I couldn't uninstall it quick enough. I could have lived with it but not having a start button played havoc with my OCD.

Aliensense is the way to get past the password slowdown my friend :) Made a little movie earlier of it, facial recognition FTW.

Win8? Will likely skip...have a hard enough time keeping friend's slimy digits off my screen as is.

Anywho, Yeah latest vbios from Chastity way back when. .93vbios with and w/o
overdrive (kept handy, because repair @ asus they downgrade the damn thing every time..even dinged a tech for it on a survey).

Unless there is another I should be aware of?

(<snicker> derailed my own thread...is that a record?)

If you have the latest Vbios go back and try what I said again you need to get it back to scratch so that a standard VGA adaptor installs at boot if it still says 5800 adaptor it has not worked you need to crap clean in safe mode. Go to the official website and download the latest driver full package and install from scratch. If 12.4 is not working try 12.3 and upgrade it to 12.4.

I am skipping it sadly. Its looks great and shows a lot of promise and improvement but they turned it into an Ipad and took away my start button.

Tried 12.6 a couple of nights ago...same crap as before, no dice.

Got power back a few hours ago...gotta love the U.S's mid-east weather...freaking storm brewed in minutes. Was told it went from 100+ F to 70F in 10 minutes.

Sprinting to my car, tornado sirens started up, along with 25mph+ winds...tried t escape the longer but quicker way...nope.

Power lines leaning at a 45deg angle are not good...especially for a good 1/4 of a mile along my 'escape' route.

Well, time to dig in and do the cc safe mode shuffle.

Crogge: No way to tell if the vBIOS has been updated unless you KNOW you've done it (maybe Radeon Bios Editor could tell you, I think...should be version 93).

Your computer BIOS is current, IIRC. NOT the same.

If you *DO NOT* recall making a bootable thumbdrive (flashdrive) and putting 5 files on it
(fixati.bat, fixOD.bat atiflash.exe and two .rom files) you are still on stock vBIOS which cause
    the problems you describe.

    G73Jh GSOD Vbios Update - Page 45

Had issues like yours 1st week of ownership...after vBIOS flash, worked grand, after vBIOS update with OverDrive, worked great and could overclock the videocard. 700Mhz core = default, most games stable at 750Mhz and can do gpu folding@home at 790Mhz.

Had the fans replaced and the darn thing came back at stock vBIOS (GRRRR).
    Reflashed on the spot.

Now that I think about it, I may have to flash to default, install the drivers and reflash to OverDrive. I have a vague recollection that some ATI driver do not behave/install if OD is
active (OD ability in CCC is still there, installer just does not like seeing it active...weird, but deja vu is strong).

Just updated to 12.6 a few days ago from 10.x (I forget). No problems so far.

On bios 211 and updated vbios (again, I forget. I think it was the one with "93" in the file name)

noticed a decrease in gpu utilization using hwinfo64 while playing mass effect 3 on max settings. around 5-10%.

straight installation. did not use driver sweeper, etc

Greaaaat, did a full reload and updates, and 12.6 installs w/o a hitch.

Now to get all the asus stuff back on (creative drivers especially) and working.

    Joy!
