I am still updating this thread. There is a lot of info to go through. If you have any suggestions feel free to PM me.
(update:23.02.12.Added some more info on @tillas method: Clevo and JH heatsink problem and solution; Soldering the old mount on the motherboard; This info also applies to the 6990M now as confirmed by Dionysius )
Special thanks to the forums pioneers Thanatospy, @tilla, Tijo and all of the ppl who have given us information on how/what/were to find more information![]()
IMPORTANT INFORMATION; Please read the following
The Radeon 6970m ( Applies to the HD 6990m, confirmed my Dionysius) being installed in the ASUS G73JH is not officially supported by ASUS and will most likely void the warranty ( Do this at your own risk!!!). If you don´t feel like you can do this type of mod or don´t know anything about taking the notebook apart then it is better that you do not.
If you are up to the challenge then here are some things you will need to know.
First part ist how to take the notebook apart. You can find a good guide here http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/589825-how-completely-disassemble-g73.html
Even though the 6970 will draw more power you can use the standard G73JH 150W power brick and have no problem with some overclocking also the 6970M produce more heat than the Mobility 5870 so cooling the GPU is key. Heat was the reason for some of the failed attempts.
The motherboard will need a slight modification to get it done as the standard ASUS Mobility 5870 card is wider then the 6970M and one mounting point will not reach. You will not need to mode the motherboard but is highly recommended that you use a strong mount for the GPU or the heatsink might not cover some parts of the card.
So is this worth the efford ? My opinion is ... yes it is. The power boost is enought for most GPU demanding games to work on high settings.
Different types of Radeon 6970M/VBIOSes and their effects on the ASUS G73JH
A comparison of the ASUS Mobility 5870 and a standard MXM 6970M
Dell 6970M vs ASUS 5870M
Clevo 6970M vs ASUS 5870M
Eurocom/MSI 6970M vs ASUS 5870M
So far we have seen 3 types of Radeon 6970M:
Clevo:Green
Dell: Dark brown
MSI and Eurocom :Cyan
There might be more but so far have only found 3.
The card Dell mostly used in the M17x R3/M18x-R1: will work in the G73JH but the fans will be running at 4200-4500 RPM (from Hwinfo64) Warning the Dell GPU might end up killing itselg as some pins seem to control the fan that are not use on the g73. At this time there is no solution to this. Me and a few others are working at his problem and we hope that will have a solution in the near future. (HDMI works but might have a Sound over HDMI issue but driver reinstall will fix that)
Sleep mode does not work as it should. Insted of going to sleep mode the notebook will hibernate. (Am looking for a solution)
Clevo (and resellers). This card so far is the best option to go for as reported by @tilla. The fans will work as they should or at least the fans will slow down if the temps. go down. ( Might have HDMI problems )
Clevo GPU core also has a thermal paste cover build on the GPU not like other brand GPUs that have the cover on the heatsink. (Look at the first three pictures)
MSI and Eurocom 6970M: Strange part is that it has issues similar to the Dell 6970M. The fans will be at a constant speed no matter what the GPU temps. Also the CPU fan will be at a constant 4300RPM as reported by Thanatospy. (HDMI works)
So what card to pick ? If it were up to me I would go with the clevo as @tilla has shown us the fans work much better then on the Dell( until a fix can be found for the Dell and MSI GPU)
Please note: You can try to flash Dell GPUs to Clevo but it not recommended as it might brick the GPU. Also you will have to do it via DOS as windows Atiwinflash will no allow you to flash it giving you a Bios version String mismatch error.
Heatsinks : ASUS G73JH VS the Alienware M17X R3
There are 2 options at the moment but that does not mean that you can not use other option.
First of all here is a good idea on how the stock un-moded JH heatsink look on the 6970M (pictures all thanks to @tilla)
And a picture of the JH heatsink from the top
You can see that the main parts GPU core and the mem. chips are coverd but the bottom part of the heatsink has parts that extend out and might not ensure a good contact between the heatsink and the GPU.
Moding the JH heatsink:
You can use the JH heatsink with the 6970M but you will need to modified the heatsink to make it work. The best GPU to use with this mode is the one that has a backplace and wide mount holes as the solderd heatsink mounts will need smaller screws to be able to attach the heatsink.
Standard JH heatsink
Modified heatsink (by Thanatospy)
You will need to cut the heatsink so the GPU core and mem. Are covered.
Here you can see the method of attaching the heatsink to the GPU with a backwords backplate to give the GPU good pressure and ensure that it cover all the components.
Here is a picture of the finished heatsink.
With this mode is it subjected to use smaller heatsinks to cover the resistors at the bottom of the GPU
Thanadospy-s method
@tilla-s method
If we look at @tillas modification then you can see that is is almost the same method as Thanatospys except the JH screws have been used and the build itself looks cleaner. Also is this method is easyer then Thanatospys method.
The bottom part of the GPU will have to be cut or grinde down using a saw or any grinding tool that you can get your hands on.
Also as stated by @tilla the screws for Clevo are smaller then the JH ones and the back-plate (X-cross mount) of the asus 5870M will not fit through the 6970M holes:
This is not as big problem as you can use the JH screws. The screws are long enough to reach the back-plate. It will need more pressure on it but it will work.
You can see exactly how @tila has cut the bottom part of the heatsink. You just need the JH heatsink to be able to cover the core and mem. chips as they generate the most heat.
@tilla also added copper heatsink to the transistors and resistors of the GPU:
Copper should be the best option as it has a better abillity to remove heat from components of the GPU.
The heatsinks can be added to the GPU by using thermal tape or if you dare then thermal glue.
Finished mod. by @tilla
There has be some talk about not adding copper or other heatsinks to the GPU bottom part as the GPU-s do not seem to genereta that much heat but it is still recommended that if you plan to do the mode you add the extra heatsinks to the GPU. Why else would other brands use bigger heatsinks that cover the whole GPU.
Modified R3 heatsink
A second option with a lot more work is a modified Alienware R3 heatsink. This option will cover the GPU as intended on systems with the 6970M as standard.
Tools and parts needed:
You will need bouth the JH heatsink and Alienware M17x R3 heatsink (Can use other heatsink that fit the 6970m)
R3 heatsink
You will need to use a heat gun ( something that will be able to solder copper 650c ) to solder part of the JH heatsink to the Alienware M17x R3 heatsink. When soldering use gloves as the pipes and heatsink will get hot and you can burn yourself. You will have to work fast when soldering the heatpipe as you do not want it to expand to much (it will lose its ability to transfer heat from the heatsink to the vents. It might help to use some sort of clamps to fix the pipe on the heatsink when soldering the JH pipes to the R3.
Heat pipes soldered off the R3 heatsink.
You will need to grind part of the R3 heatsink off to make the JH heatpipes fit the R3 heatsink. Also you have to keep in mind that the R3 has 3 pipes and JH only 2 heatpipes so positioning is key. You can also add some extra copper or Al. heatsinks to fill in the gaps.
How the JH heatpipes look on the R3 heatsink.
Here is a picture of the finished heatsink from the other side.
Soldered heatsink. (might not look the part but work perfect)
The pros. Of this option is that the heatsink covers all the needed parts of the GPU and will make the swap look almost like it was intended for the notebook.
Motherboard : Modification to the motherboard
I added this section as you will have a few options to make the 6970M sit on the mobo perfectly. As the ASUS mobility 5870 is wider the mounting points are spread more apart then on the standard MXM design.
You can make a new mounting point for the 6970M as i did or can re-solder the existing mount. You will have remove the screw from the other side to re-solder the mount. Also you can use something to hold the 6970M against the heatsink. It is not subjected to but the card in without proper support as it could lead to a heat damage.
Another method is soldering the existing mount to the new location as done by @tilla. You will need to use a soldering tools to get the old mount off. (The mount also has a small screw on the other side that needs to be removed before you try to solder it off.
When soldering be very careful as the heat might damage other components on the motherboard!!
Fan control : Options to control the fan speed
So far there is no good fix for the fan speed (Dell and MSI cards). The fans work at a constant speed of 4300RPM witch should be almost max but for some reason it sound more like 50% or so (Can compare it to the 5870 when it hits 74c and the fans speed up). Good news is that it is vbios related and can be fixed as soon as we are able to find the options.
For clevo card users you will have system fans control and it works.
To get the fans to work at 100% you can use Thanatospys method or the EC hex editor method to change the fan speed to 100% ( Will make the fans run at 100% until restart)
Thanatospys method (Need to rewire the fans)
Things to know after the swap:
As a Dell service said the GPU can boot up to windows without the heatsink and it will not burn. I did not have the guts to test this and also my first attempt ended in a total FAIL with a dead card. The things to remember to do before any bench or game is.
Use any hardware monitoring software to monitor the GPU-s temps before you do any tests. (recommend HWinfo)
Give the GPU small tests: web browser, videos etc. with the monitoring software open at all time. The temps should not go over 70c at idle.
When overclocking and running bench tests try to go up in stages. Do not try to max the GPU for the first time.
PSU and overclocking: Power consumption and power brick to use.
First of all you do not need to upgrade the PSU if you are running I7-720 or the 740QM (Also 840QM works fine with 150W and the 6970) as the W used by CPU and GPU will not go over 150W. The stock PSU gives you the ability to do some overclocking. I was able to go 825/1130 anything over that and i got driver crash with 3dmark 11. Having a 180W will be more then enough to do some proper OC.
JH users with the 920xm or 940xm might have problems as they draw a lot of power form the powerbrick. You would need atleast 240w or so.
For even more extreme moding here is a some information on how to mode a Alienware 240w PSU to work with the JH (thank to Thanatospy)

Awesome work DH48 and everyone else who has had the guts to mod their G73JH's! It looks like at this time the best card to get (at a premium price) is the Clevo card. I am waiting for the next line of GPU's however I believe this guide will be very relevant. If this is an option for future series GPU's and coupled with a 920XM or 940XM the lifespan of this laptop could be tremendous. +1rep
Did anyone ever have any luck with upgradeyourlaptop? Seems to me they are selling crap. For example no returns at all. -
Nice job. This seems a little overly complicated for me though so I'll pass. I'd rather just upgrade the whole laptop when it's out of date lol.
-
man this is great work.
if i resolve my problems i will do this mod for my asus g73jh. -
Very nice work! If I had a g73 to spare, I would definately copy your work. Keep it up.
-
Gonna put this in the sticky at the top of the forum so it'll be easy to find when it gets buried.
-
Fantastic work and well done to ignore the risks and costs to prove this works.
+1 well earned. -
Good work DH48.
1. Can you list all the people which swapped successfully? And what brand they used.
2. ATM I can't use HDMI output. No external screen is recognized.
Do you all have the same problem? Any information about it? Only read stg. about missing sound but not about the whole disfunction.
Sure a vBios thing, eh? Thx -
Yes @tilla is a vBios problem that cant recognize your hgmi output, try to find a vBios that make it work it, my hdmi output works without a single problem
-
Where is your card from? Eurocom?
Can you give me a link to your vBios? I would send you a PM with my mail address.
Are there any informations about exchange of different vBios? I know about the possible problem between Dell and the others. -
My card is from eurocom, the bios im using you can find it here http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/590979-6970-enabling-overdrive-undervolting-your-r3.html, before upgrade a vbios you should see if they are made for the same kind of vRAM, im happy because i find fast my solution to my crazy speeds and hdmi, hope you can fix it too
-
Wow awesome guide! I stopped coming here since a few months and last time I checked nobody was able to do this, it's fun to see that it's success now!
-
Sry have been offline for a few days. Got something stuck in my eye .... literaly...was in the hospital
.
Ill update the first post today.
@tilla I have found that clevo GPU.s might have HDMI problem but not all. Can try to flash to eurocom but as Thanatospy said you need to be sure it has the same chip. -
At first I will try the one DH48 sent me. It's from a X7200 card.
But thx. -
hi mate , Do know something hd 5870m can be flashed to 6870m there are many people who sucess in that project will it work with asus g73jh cards??
-
Not to be rude but.....what are you smoking ?
I know you can flash a desktop 6950 to a 6970 but a 5870M to 6870M. Cant be done.
you could add a link were ppl have done this. -
Using google before just claiming something can't be done wouldn't hurt...
The 5870m and the 6870m are technically identical cards, it works. See here: M17X-R2 MR 5870 mod to 6870M with OverDrive Support
However, with Asus not sticking to the MXM specs at all, it's hard to say whether it'll work with a JH card. -
I tested the vBios from the Clevo X7200 6970's. This one with the unlocked fan settings. Same problem, no HDMI.
I'm still afraid of flashing one of this Dell vBios.
I need a Eurocom vBios. -
Here is the one i had on my Eurocom card, good thing i kept a backup of the original. It says Clevo, but it is from Eurocom 6970m. Now, i still need to get that card tested sometime to see if i really killed it or not back when i was testing it in the JH.

Thx tijo. Still no success.

Is VGA working correctly? VGA was working fine when i tested the 6970m in my G73. I never went around to testing HDMI though given the problems i encountered.

Hi,
Thinking about doing the swap. Of the three type of card listed at start which is this AMD Radeon Mobility HD6970M (BlackcombXT); 2GB DDR5; MXM 3.0b; VGA Module | eBay -
-
-
Yo i post info with real sucess, i have now ordered an hd 6990 from ebay for 340$ cheap eh! but i have not paid yet, but have any one heard about peltiers ?? im gona paste 3 of those in my 6990 and try to turn on, it will keep gpu under 20 C because they get in zub zero temps in seconds . and I will give external power supply for it to work. this is only for testing perpose.
according to my guess it should work great but i have to make the brackets to fit on it. OFFTHETOPIC : but first of all i have to wake up my beast.
-
LOL well i feel dumb. No wonder i did not find anything on google. I googled 5870 to 6970m
Well it is MXM but that vbios is for dell. Asus has hardwired voltage for the clock speeds and i think they have diferent chip on the GPU. You need to find some info if this would work on a MSI as someone here did flash MSI 5870 vbios on to the ASUS 5870M and it worked ....well almost fans were still stuck at constant speed of 4000RPM somethnig.
@tilla Tested bouth the HDMI and VGA work on the dell card. A bit odd for the clevo GPU. The AW M17x R2 is known to have audio problems over the HDMI but video seems to work with clevo cards. No HDMI support on the GPU ??
Dell should be hynix chip and clevo is samsung.
You tested the Eurocom vbios @tilla ? -
@DH48
Thx for testing. Yeah, it's strange.
I tested the vBIOS from X7200 (Crossfire-version) and the one from Eurocom. Everytime I had to reinstall the driver.
Is there any mysterious command I'd overseen? IMO just connect the HDMI and then switch to it with FN+F8 or Win+P.
My TV recognizes a connection. I tested with my Acer and it is easy normally. I know the HDMI was working with my 5870, so I think it's not damaged.
Don't will flash to Dell vBIOS just for HDMI. Except somebody can give me a real all clear signal.
Thanatospy, you straight flashed your Eurocom card to Dell vBIOS?
@evgasr2
IMO cross-flashing a 5870 to 6870 is dumb!
What was the result of this? Right, nothing to speak about!
First, try to activate your G73. Then you can come back and tell us your success story of a working 6990m. Thx -
Well my TV autodetects it when i boot the notebook up with the hdmi connected and i get the loginscreen. If i plug it in on the desktop then i have to press the Fn+F8 combo.
Have to do one more test as i can not keep HDMI working with the lid closed. It goes right to sleep.Did not do it before.
It detects the connection but as unkown or comes back as a error?
Odd question thou what HDMI support does the clevo have ? 1.0-1.3 or 1.4 ? -
evgasr2 you need to respect the threads of the forum man, if you have something to share and dont have nothing about THIS post DH48 work so hard to make it plz create a new one, this is for the info about getting 6970m inside, if you know a mod to flash the 5870>6970 or you gonna move to a 6990m pls just create a new one, or you can read this one: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/584295-upgrade-g73-jh-6970-a.html all the questions you have gonna find them there, thx for your time keep this thread with usefull info plz -
@tilla ,@DH48, @Thanatospy
im sorry guys, I just told what i felt , i did hope with my 5870 to 6870 would help someone , but its ok . however i need you guys help to make my beast alive so dont ignore me.
sorry again. and sorry for posting in this thread.
-
Hi guys,
I was brave and straight flashed the Dell vBIOS.
After I found some other posts by svl7, the Clevo 6970 was confirmed to run with the Dell vBIOS. This encouraged me a bit more. LOL
So, the beast still works and...TADA... HDMI works now (at least partially).
That's cool.
The fans are working still the same. So no more problems?
Can't switch with FN+F8 (does nothing), but with Win+P. If I connect the cable, the TV gets screen too.
The driver installed something with HDMI audio, but can't activate HDMI AUDIO output. Will test HDMI audio later on.
After connect I got this message. HDMI to DVI
edit:
It's possibly because the P150HM and some other have DVI port too, next to HDMI. The card now may "think" there is something on the DVI.Attached Files:

LOL you got ... @tilla
Hmm found this :" Clevo (and resellers) 6970m (This is the recommended version and will be used in this guide): There are two versions of these type of cards; the cards meant for single GPU setups (Clevo P150hm, P151hm, P170hm) and the ones meant for Crossfire setups (Clevo X7200, X8100). Both cards look physically the same with the difference being the type of VBIOS they use. Thus, the Clevo cards meant for single GPU setups does NOT support CrossfireX and would need to be reflashed in order to gain that ability. However, both versions allow the system fans to respond to temperature and also allows the system to shut down, sleep, hibernate and go on battery mode without crashing. Both of these also give you access to ATi Overdrive in the Catalyst Control Center. This means that you don’t have to disable ULPS when overclocking in Crossfire mode. Unfortunately, these cards/VBIOSses do NOT support audio over HDMI/DisplayPort (but hopefully this could be fixed with a VBIOS update/mod)."
So might need some work to get the audio to work.
Fans work as before? -
Yeah...thx
I'd read this text too.
Here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...-6990-your-m17x-r2-single-gpu-crossfirex.html
Here is some more information:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...u-need-know-upgrading-problems-solutions.html
-> DP/HDMI works. Sound through DP/HDMI works as well (with Dell vbios and Dell DP/HDMI driver installed...
A Dell DP/HDMI driver?
The fans are working the same with all the different vBIOS. I guess, it's really a hardware sending value thing you mentioned. Maybe a diff in the bus protocol. You see, also AW can go wild with a Dell card.
And WTH, why are there such differences at all.
What can a Dell vBIOS do to let the HDMI work and the Clevo (original) not? Weird.
We need the master vBIOS tool. Hehe
Where are all those engineers, who program these vBIOS all day long? I guess they don't do it with notepad.^^ -
might look for driver on the AW support page.
Well the bios coders are all locked away....hidden to the public as it might spark WW IIIif the knowledge get out.
I talked to one who knows a bit about bios programing...well was a waste of time as he just said its hardwired and cannot be done. Kind of sound like most support guys -
Also no performance difference, but it let me install the DP/HDMI audio driver from Dell, which wasn't supported with the other bios.
There are several possibilities to implement fan control in a notebook... per EC for example, or also per MXM GPU itself, though I haven't seen this so far. No idea how Asus handles this in the G73, but what you could easily do is a hardmod, which say enables the fan at about 65°C and disables it again at 55°C... you just need some cables and some thermostats (as NO switch), and of course a soldering iron. Really easy.
If you want to tinker a bit and want more than just one fan trigger point / fan speed you could build a small fan controller yourself, with some temp sensing diodes and for example a MAX6639 pwm fan controller, should work I guess, and it would still be pretty small. -
I can see the HDMI entry in the sound output settings. But cannot set it to default. It is disabled (because not found). -
Did a small HTML update in the first post. The images are now preview size and just open the image in a bigger size if you click on it.
More to come after work
@tilla and the drivers installed OK? if the system cant find the HDMI should it not give a error when installing the HDMI.
Might the HDMI function a bit diferently on the clevo ? Just like the fans? -
I think my vga is dead ,so what 6970m should i buy?? i got the money
.
and im not going to mod a aw m17x r3 heatsink but the JH and use small heat sinks for chips. so which brand should I buy . -
If you want fan control then clevo would be the best option if HDMI then Dell.
There might be a fix in the future for the Dell and clevo but at the moment you have to pick what you need. -
I guess clevo is good for me, and does the vga port work??
-
yes it works
-
thank you,
offthetopic: can Asus 5870m card be flashed with msi 5870 vbios ??
if so how can i do that , is it normal procedure as flashing asus vbios or is it diffrent?? -
This thread is now a waste of time I think now that the 3rd Gen SB and 6xx, 7xxx series are within a few months grasp.
Really is. The 920XM or the 940XM is just not comparable to the 3rd Gen SB. And the 670M will still be significantly faster than the 6970M. -
Now now hulawafu77 dont be too optimistic. This thread should work for the 79xx series to. Also i am yet to see a game that runs like crap with the 6970m with the JH.
Also were did you get your information that it will be faster ?
I will try the 79xx as soon as it hits the Dell store.
Also we are not thinking that the JH will last for a liftime anyway. Give it a few years and it will be like the AW M17x R1 now is.
Now we just need to hope that Asus makes a nother mistake and goes back to MXM
But a bit more information on the swap.
Found some more issues yesterday that i am working on.
Sleep does not work as it should.Sleep will but the computer into hibernate. Also closing the lid with the setings on "Do nothing" will make it hibernate.
Also found out that HDMI had no sound output. But managed to fix that (was a driver issue)
Might try a fresh install soon as there are so many drivers on the computer that it would be best to just start fresh with the problems.
Also tested the EC 100% fans speed hack. It work and well no i know that the 4300 shown by HWinfo is not correct. The fans can get louder. When changed the code i got 4500 but 200RPM more cant make it that loud. -
is it a dell card??
-
This is a info thread. Read the first post!
@hulawafu77
Don't flame around here. Show me a buyable >78xx/670 for a reasonable price. You can't?
And all are hoping for a huge performance increase. Would be bad if not, eh.
1. Isn't that claimed everytime a "new" generation is coming?^^
2. Facts or not happend.
Sry for beeing rude, but IMO there are enough such speculation threads on NBR.
@DH48
Which HDMI driver you had installed?
As mentioned in the other 69xx threads, there could be some issues with hibernate/sleep/shutdown.
I just tested to close the lid while connected to my TV. It gone to standby. But I guess that was the setting. -
The HDMI that came with ATI CCC it installs all the drivers if you download the installer. I had been over installing all the last drivers and that was the fault with the HDMI sound it seemes. Did a full uninstall also remove the HDMI devices in the device manager and got it to work
I think a fresh install of windows is the best way to go for me. Might fix the hybernate and sleep mode.
It stays in sleep mode for 5 mind and then hibernates. I usualy just put it to sleep and was able to wake it up in the morning. Now have to wait for it to restore itself.
Sleep mode work only if you wait for it to go to sleep and then close the lid. As soon as you close the lid before sleep mode, it will hibernate. -
