PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT A GUIDE FOR INSTALLING THE 10.5 DRIVERS SPECIFICALLY, BUT FOR INSTALLING DISPLAY DRIVERS IN GENERAL.
This is another tutorial in response to a request,
and as I normally say, having learned so much from others, the least I can do is give this back.
PLEASE NOTE: THESE ARE THE STEPS THAT WORKED FOR ME. I CANNOT GUARANTEE IT WILL WORK FOR YOU, NOR CAN I TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY IF IT DOES NOT. ANY UPDATES TO YOUR DRIVERS ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
First thing to do is to download and install Driver Sweeper from Guru3D.com. This free software download is safe (I have it on all my computers), and is useful for cleaning out all traces of the old driver. Please take a minute to read about this application, as it is usefull for removing traces of other drivers, not just display drivers. Thank you Guru3D.

Locate and download the driver version you want to install, and save it on your desktop. If it came as a .zip or .rar file, please extract it and save.
Now we uninstall the old driver, by: Start > Control Panel > Uninstall a program.
When the Uninstall or change a program window opens, select ATI Catalyst Install Manager, and then click on Change at the top.
The Catalyst Install Manager opens up, and you want to click on next. On the next screen, select Express Uninstall All ATI Software, and click on next.

This will start to uninstall the driver, and related ATI software, and end with a Remove the Program window, on which you click Remove.

When this is done, click on Finish.
It will then tell you that you need to restart the computer, and so click on Yes
When the computer reboots, we want to go and run Driver Sweeper, but we want to do this is Safe Mode.
To enter Safe Mode: Reboot your computer and immediately start tapping the F8 key until the "Advanced Boot Options" screen appears. Select "Safe Mode" and press the Enter key.
The computer now boots into Safe Mode and this is confirmed with Safe Mode in all 4 corners of the screen. (Sometimes there will be a Windows Help and Support window open, covering the desktop. Just go ahead and close this window).
To open Drive Sweeper: Click Start > All Programs > Phyxion.net > Driver Sweeper.
Check the ATI Display box, and click on Analyse, to see what will be cleaned out. Next click on Clean, to start the cleaning process.
![]()
It will ask if you are sure you want to continue, and you click on OK.
When done, it will ask you if you want to reboot, and you click on OK.
The computer boots back into normal mode, but remember, we removed the drivers, so the resolution is going to look all strange.
We now need to locate the Display Driver that we want to install, that we downloaded and saved on our desktop.
In most cases, there should be a setup.exe file, and this is what you want to double click on.
Follow the instructions as provided, and your new driver should install. You will need to restart the computer at the end of the installation.
And when your computer boots up, your new display driver should be installed and ready to go.
Hope this is helpful to someone.

I guess ill be sticking to stock drivers now or going back to 10.4. Thanks for the help though

I just installed it over top of the old ones. No problems here.

This guide is not meant for installing 10.5 specifically, but rather for updating drivers generally.
I hope some can still find it helpful.
Thanks to Kalim for his excellent suggestions regarding streamlining this guide. -
What's the reason you need to uninstall it like this?
Cant u just download 10.5 and install it over the current driver? -
It's a good practice. -
I am having a little trouble with updating my ATI drivers. I just purchased an Asus g73jh-rbbx05. I tried the method listed above for updating to the 10.7 driver, but even after final reboot, I don't have the option of changing the screen resolution to 1920x1080. Plus, when I right click on desktop and go to Catalyst Control Center, nothing comes up. I tried this method for the 10.6 driver as well, but I have the same problem. Please let me know what I am doing wrong.
Should I just reformat? I have the recovery DVDs; do I press just F10 on notebook boot while recovery disk is in the drive? I'm sorry if these questions sound amateurish, but I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can provide. -
asphodel, you have the Best Buy version of this laptop. max resolution is 1600x900.
-
Ugh, sorry. Typed in the A1 specs. The problem remains, however. The resolution is all weird and I am unable to choose 1600x900 as an option. Plus, I don't have access to the Catalyst Control Center.

Greetings, I'd like to ask about a problem with reinstalling drivers on my g73jh. After uninstalling the catalyst package I - of course - use the driversweep in safe mode, but for some reason, after performing another analysis, it shows that registry entries are still intact, and driversweeper cannot uninstall them. Should i try to erase them manually? Because leaving the registry keys, and trying to install new drivers, results in the same - dead screen, no ccc response etc. I'm on win 7 64-bit.
