So here what happens:
COD Black Ops: Freezes right in the start menu
MOH: Freezes right in the start menu
Mafia II: Freezes, gray screen, unfreezes
Civ V: Freezes, gray screen, unfreezes
All up to date: Bios, vBios, video drivers, windows 7 fix.
So I unplugged power adapter. Games running on battery
COD Black Ops: Does not freeze
MOH : Does not freeze
Mafia II: Have to test yet
Civ V: Have to test yet
Then I remembered I've had an Asus laptop about a year ago. I do not remember the model, but it was the one before G73. I had the same problem with the power supply. I could play games fine on battery. So back then I thought the mobo was faulty and returned the laptop back.
What do you guys think? Is it the power supply or the motherboard?
I will test more games to confirm it has something to do with power supply.
Thanks!

If you are using Power4Gear Hybrid, I would update that. You can also try disabling the power saving feature in CCC and keep it all on High Performance.
-
I have tried that. I have uninstalled Power4Gear, I have changed power savings to highest performance.
I have rolled back ATI driver to the one on Asus website.
Sound driver fix.
After a few more hours of testing I can conclude that no matter what I do I get this:
Games freeze when AC adapter plugged in.
Games do not freeze when run on battery.
I have googled and goodled and have not find anything similar to my problem (and that is 2 Asus laptops, different models , in the row)
I give up... -
And you are saying that you can still play games at same FPS as without correct? Meaning that your clocks remain the same while gaming on the battery and on a/c.
After hours and hours of reasearch it seems like the GSOD was caused by timing and voltage issues. I would assume that our freezing issues also would be a result of the same types of isses. I'm guessing voltage is more stable when on battery, but that's just an uneducated guess. -
No, the clocks drop to 500/250 on battery. However, I can still play MoH at maximum settings just fine. Not sure about FPS tho.
But that does not really mean anything. The bottom line is there must be something wrong with the motherboard. It does not even have anything to do with GSOD. 3 games simply freez as soon as I run them. I hard reboot, unplug the AC adapter, start the game, it runs for hours just fine! No freezing, no GSOD! -
I would suggest you contact for an RMA then.
Best of luck. -
I know... but I am not sure whether I want to RMA or to return (the hell with $130 restocking fee)... I can ask newegg for replacement, but by the time it all gets done I may run out of 30-day return policy...
-
Yea that's what I'm thinking dealing with now. I don't think we can get a refund on the g73jh-x1, only replacement. I'm hoping it comes back to me in working condition
-
Did you buy it from newegg as well?
-
yea
10char -
I just spoke with newegg, they said replacement takes about 10 days. I am still debating what should I do...
-
Well im not sure they gona restock the JHs though, but they have ASUS G73JW-XN1 in stock, not sure if you want Nvidia, but just thowing an option in case they dont restock the JH.
-
That one is more expensive than the one I bought. I got a refurb one for $880. They probably will not replace with that one.
I am too afraid they might not have a replacement in stock -
Well probably not in stock, but Refurbs will keep on coming, since the G73JH was a high selling laptop, so i would just return it for replacement when they get it in stock.
-
Well don't send it to asus via RMA, that voids your warranty with newegg. Just got off the phone with them.
-
Well, I have decided to give Asus another try. It is just a very good deal for a gaming laptop under $900! I will be sending my laptop back to newegg for a replacement. Hopefully, a replacement will work properly. Thanks for the support guys!
