The machine was RMA'd not long after i bought it because the graphics card kept overheating. Over the last couple of months, the optical drive would eject randomly. Now i have this permanently. It will boot and is usable on the right half of the screen, other than the fact that everything is a psychadelic blur. So...
What is wrong with it this time?
Could the Optical Drive and screen/graphics be related problems?
Is it easy to fix?
Do i complain to Asus about them doing a crappy repair the first time and that this shouldn't have happened, and complain that it is not fit for purpose?
Any other advice?
Thanks folks!

Asus G73JH PSOD Hardware Failure on Originally purchased X1 model - YouTube From this video and a lot of post reading you will need to replace the display panel.
I doubt the random ejects are related, does it happen with a CD/DVD loaded or when it is empty?GremlinUK likes this. -
Cheers Josea, that looks exactly like it. I should be able to sort it myself
The optical drive ejects when empty. I was considering a different drive anyway as this one sucks at reading lots of discs anyway.
thanks so much for the answer. I feel a lot less suicidal now. -
Glad to help, from what I read drive replacement is the way to for the optical drive!

Connect the laptop to a monitor through HMDI or VGA. If you get the same behavior as on the laptop's display, then the GPU is shot, otherwise, it's either the LVDS cable or the LCD panel. JOSEA is probably right, but it never hurts to make sure.

Thanks guys. I got an external monitor on it, and it's fine, so definitely the screen, which is cheaper to fix
I'll look into finding a Blu Ray drive that doesn't suck too. -
Note that it could also be the cable between the display and motherboard.

My desktop is dead too but it's getting rebuilt over the next couple of weeks. When that's up and running, i'll be able to risk destroying the laptop. There seem to be a lot of compatible HD screens offered on Ebay. Any one got any advice for buying a new one, if it's not just a cable issue?
Thanks again guys! -

Get a decent model of LCD from a vendor that does not just substitute for a "compatible" model since you do stare at the screen a lot.

Thanks again guys. I'll probably be back in about 3 weeks looking for screen threads.

I replaced mine a year ago. You can see my posts on the thread that JOSEA provided just above.
I just want to say that it's still working great, and I'm still very happy with it. Great all around. I do gaming and general computing, not a lot of photo editing.
Good luck with it!GremlinUK likes this.
