I searched around, but couldn't find a problem like mine.

My optical drive whirrs when I put the CD in. I've had this badboy for about a year and a half (bought in October-ish of 2011). I've had no real issues with it yet, but this is a little worrisome. In previous instances, the optical has made no noise what so ever except for the slight hum that most drives put out.

But today, when trying to burn a CD, it started to make an enormous amount of whirring noises to the point where I was worried that the computer would spin off my desk. It also seems to lag the hell out of my desktop and other interface-related actions. I couldn't move a window without it taking 20 seconds, and the CD burn completion just froze.

    What do?

    Just a couple of questions:

Is your media firmly clicked into the optical bay?

    Have you used multiple CDs?

If the computer is still under warranty then call ASUS tech support @ (888) 678-3688

If it's OOW (out of warranty) and it's the drive that came with your system, then check the ASUS estore for a replacement.

If it was an upgraded drive like Bluray, then contact your reseller.

Otherwise you can pull the drive out, and get a simple replacement off the internet. A standard drive costs around $20.

The disc is FIRMLY in the bay.

I've used two different CD's so far.

The computer is under warranty, but through Best Buy's Geek Squad. I'll have to figure out if they or ASUS are my official backers.

Also, the whirring is definitely louder during "burning" than "reading," though it's still considerably loud during "reading."

Anyway, thanks again. If you have any thoughts on what it could be, let me know. Faulty drive? Screws coming loose? etc.
