Anyone also had this happen? Mine started flickering today and went on and off for a while when i was gaming, and eventually completely died.
Im hating this laptop more and more.
-
Actually after some time it came back on, but it still flickers and goes off randomly and back on.
Im starting to consider chucking this thing out the window. -
RMA for replacement. You probably got a lemon if you hate it so much.
-
No, i got an Asus... never again.
I could live with the touchpad/keyboard problem or that flickering light, but i cant live with a GPU issue that cant be fixed (no, replacement wont help becouse all these Asus GPUs are defective). -

OK what's defective with the GPUs?
Also I found a fix to the touchpad/keyboard issue - you have to disable multitouch in the mouse menu in control panel. Just disable ChiralMotion, Pinchzoom etc; then the IO conflict is gone. -
You really seem to have a lot of problems with yours. I'd RMA it if I were you.
I got no problems whatsoever. Had 1 GSOD and that's it. Can run furmark for 2 hours. So not all asus gpu's are defective. No hardware is the same even though the name and components are the same, they can still differ. -
@moral_hazard
Becouse Asus uses cheaper components to make their Mobility 5870 (cheaper vRAM, PCB... - the only thing provided by ATI is the chipset that is the same on all the Mob. 5870) these GPUs GSOD on any newer driver than 10.1. They also run hotter than the other Mobility 5870 GPUs.
@mersenne
I never even had the IO conflict, and i did what you said and the problem is still there. I tried stock, every newer and older synaptics driver i could find and every possible setting and nothing got rid of the problem completely. Others report the same thing, so you are alone in thinking that. As i said, perhaps youre a slower typist and dont see the issue.
@Freaxy
All the GPUs ive tested and seen tested had the same issue, so its an obvious conclusion ive made. And thats also what ive been told by reputable sources. And if you had a GSOD you have the same issue. One long furmark run is lucky and ive also managed a few, but eventually i GSOD on both cards ive had. Ive seen that if it lasts 3 runs with reboots in between its probably ok. -
I could say out of every Dodge Viper I've seen, I produced exactly 2 quarts of drool within a 3 minute period. But I've only seen three or four Dodge Vipers. -

Ken tested the machines in their warehouse and they all GSOD on the newer drivers, you can see the photos HERE.
And i told a specific number - i tested 2 gpus myself (got a replacement one which obviously didnt help) and refered to Ken testing his and a tech here tested 4 random ones in their warehouse and all got GSOD, but talking over the phone its kinda hard to get photos dont you think?
I also posted the email replys from ATI in which its evident they admit the problem is the Asus hardware.
What more do you want? A photo of how my GSODs look like? Becouse theres tons of those and i dont know how else to provide proof of something not working like this. Its not like making screenshots of working furmark runs.
Believe what you want, im here to post my facts and try to get to work with the members here to get to a solution. -
Your testing doesn't explain how some of us don't have the same issues. There's been plenty of people here that say they've never had a SOD. I have, but haven't since I recently installed 10.6.
Until you get some hardcore stress tests from the machines that appear to be okay, you don't have enough proof to come to a definitive conclusion. If your tests come to the conclusion that all units are messed up, then I would be on board for holding Asus accountable and have them fix their mistake (like refunds, fixes, and on).
And no, I'm not going to stress my system any more than I already do. I plan on keeping it going for a while and stressing it too much lowers the lifespan. -
Kaelang...since you mentioned a "Viper" in your previous post I could not help but post a photo of mine, maybe you like them. Obviously I do. Besides I think this thread needs some fun:

Thanks...hope you liked it. What state do you live in?

Nice ride.. Why do you post such photos for us poor students to see
...
-
mjf, you got the same initials as me. not the same car though.

Nice!
I assume you drive it...If so, if every time you drove it, it stalled withing a minute of pressing the accelerator, would you get it fixed or just complain about it online?
I ask, because people who can't use graphics on their G73s (arguably a high-end graphics/multimedia laptop) without crashing and don't demand the manufacturer provide a working machine... seems kind of silly to me - as silly as the car analogy above... -
Well let me answer....
HellCry...I too was a poor student. Took out many loans for college and even had to borrow $$ when I went to law school even though I was working in NYPD while going to law school full time. At the end I got two payment books for the next 10 years. So yes I all to well know the feeling.
Kaelang...plan on trying to avoid the waiting room and Florida for as long as I can.
Mark...stall? FPS has one meaning here, in the Viper it is feet per second. Hang on we are goin for a ride...........
And hey, since I have a Viper I thought i would get a lappie that was sort of appropriate, no? Hope you all don't mind the ramblings of an old guy. I like it here. -
Problem is you can't really get the G73JH replaced since it seems to happen to so many people .... chances are your next one will just get GSOD as well. They are unlikely to replace it if you tell them it works fine on the stock drivers as well.
I've given up trying to find ways I can fix it. Just going to wait till ASUS does something (which I doubt they will) any games that don't run on the G73JH i'll just play on my desktop. (Like FFXIV) -
I already replaced the GPU once and this one GSODs even faster actually, and i cant find a good GPU from the warehouse here...
G73JH Power led died.
