So I have been having overheating issues on my G73JH like many others so I decided to go ahead and re-paste using arctic silver 5. That was about a week ago and I still see almost no noticeable difference in temps. I still get about 60-68 idle and if I play long enough can still hit 100 under load. Furmark destroys the card reaching 100+ in seconds. I have dusted it out and all that as well. What could it be? I have also noticed an increase in noise coming from the laptop. Could my fan be going out? The RPM's seem fine, hitting 2800-3100 RPM at idle. Do I need to update the BIOS to 211? I cant imagine a software issue causing such terrible temp ranges. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

What are you using to measure the fan speed?? I don't think there's anything that accurately measures the fan speed on the G73.

Can you feel the heat being blown out the back? Can you heat the fans?

I assume your are talking about the GPU. I can tell mine sit at 47C idle after i repasted with MX-4, it reach 72-75C max in game. AS5 should be a pretty decent thermal paste...

Did you tried to clean the fan? Make sure you just put a small peas of thermal paste and you have to put some pressure on the heatsink (not too much).

You should update your bios to 211 and your vBios. Reinstall your drivers.
If you dont get better result with that, if i was you i would rma, you might get faulty GPU.

My laptop runs furmark maxed out at 83C on bios 211. Out of curiosity I ran bios 209 just see what happened. On 209 furmark is 89C.

211 definitely makes a difference. The hotter your temps the bigger the difference will be.

Before I repasted when I first got my laptop it ran at 106+ on 206 bios. Upgrading to 211 before repasting took me to 91C.

Update to 211 and let us know what happens. While you're at update the vbios also as others have said. Best to rule out the easy fixes before trying hard ones. Also don't use winflash.

Wow thanks for the quick replies. Valkerie that is very promising, sounds like the bios could make a big difference. I will do update that stuff. Thanks again. The program I used to measure fan speed was HWInfo32. It seemed accurate.

Make sure you follow the bios/vbios update carefully or you might brick your laptop. There should be no problem if you follow the steps as mentionned!

    Good luck!

Maybe you'll need to repaste again... it's possible you did a bad job and got some air bubbles between the die and the heatsink...

Stupid question but are you sure both fans are working? Maybe you didn't plug in the cable correctly...

I think the last repaste I saw took temps from 65 idle to 58 or so, and actually raised GPU temp0 (core) by 2-3 degrees. But it dropped memIO (temp1) to about 95 max in furmark, with about 22c ambient, and 98 with 25c ambient.

Maybe the paste wasn't done quite right? Obviously, it was better than the original, but I'm sure the heatsink needed to be screwed down more. In any event, maxing at 100 isn't unrealistic even with a decent paste job, if you've got high ambient temps and are running an older bios. 211 just makes your fans spin up sooner.

I guess you've done something wrong on repasting. You should do a repaste again. I did mine twice since my 1st repaste was bad and like yours it didn't show any noticeable changes. MY 2nd attempt was successful and now getting maximum of 79C on furmark. btw, I used ICD7 on mine. Wish you luck on 2nd try.

Well I really hope I don't have to repaste again. I actually had a computer tech do the repaste for me, so it is possible he messed it up.

The most common booboo in repasting is not following the number order for the screw posts. They are marked 1-2-3-4 for a reason. ;)

In your case, you may have some gap that the thin AS5 isn't filling 100%. I mentioned in my guide that for these non-pristine lapped heatsinks Asus used that using a thick viscous paste would be optimal. (like ICD7)
