I've done a very stupid thing: I purchased a replacement keyboard for my G73JH. I recall it saying it was compatible, and it is, mostly- it fits, as do both the cables, and it's roughly the same as the original.

However, the keys are not at all mapped correctly. Backspace is u, p is ., et cetera. Is there some way around this or will I need to return/exchange the keyboard.

The serial number is 04GNV33KUS04-3, for what it's worth, and it appears to be from the K50 series.

EDIT: I've tried a couple of remapping tools to no avail, as some keys do not register at all.

I dont know if you managed to sort this out but you must have the correct version of the keyboard for it to work properly. You could have tried reinstalling the KBFilter but if it is a different keyboard for another model even if the cable fits it wont be the same connector and all or at least most of the keyboard cables look the same so they will fit but different signals will result in pew pew results.

Your only option is to return it with an angry drawing of you smashing the keyboard over the seller's head, and pick up an official board.
