    Hi!
I have been using my G73JH for 2 years without any problem. Today I wanted to repaste it, but I wanted to check the current stock temps before applying new paste.
When I turned on my laptop I got this strange look on my screen:

I hope is nothing too serious, because I really need my laptop for work (the main reason why I bought this really expensive laptop so I could use it for years without the worry of the laptop faulting like the cheap ones) and I do not have money for a new computer or for any expensive parts (like VGA or screen panel) and the warranty has ended 3 months ago.

What is the problem and how can I fix it?

    Thank you.

    Question:
If I buy a new HANNSTAR HSD173PUW1 (or is there a better one?) panel and swap it with the current one, will that fix this issue?

I assume you already tried shutting it down and then turning it back on. The first thing i would do is check for a loose LVDS cable, with luck that is the only problem and reseating the cable will fix it.

One other thing you could check is if the laptop's VGA or HDMI out are outputing the image correctly, that will rule out any GPU issues and is actually the first thing you should do.

As for the LCD panels, some NBR users have successfully swapped the LCD for a higher quality matte panel if glare is an issue for you.

The GPU is working without any problem. The picture quality is okay on an external monitor.

I was thinking of buying a new LCD screen panel, since I need my laptop. First I was thinking about getting another HANNSTAR HSD173PUW1, but then I realized that this panel is terrible. Faulty and color banding for a few examples.

I saw LG PHILIPS LP173WF1 TLB2 and LG PHILIPS LP173WF1 TLC1 for a cheap price. Any thoughts about this? In the past I was satisfied with LG panels. Btw, does anyone know what is the difference between C1 and B2? Does anyone know a better panel? Like, is the AU OPTRONICS B173HW01 V5 a better one?

Or the problem is not the panel at all?

If the GPU is working, it is either the LVDS cable or the panel.

I have the same issue. G73 worked flawlessly for 2 years and then I got a similar screen. (well...except the early pains with the keyboard, lock ups, etc :) )
I turned off the computer at night with no issues. Turned it on the next morning with the PSOD. Works perfect with an external monitor.

I checked the lvds cable on the screen side, it seemed OK. This week I have some time and I'll take appart the keyboard side and pray for a loose cable. Otherwise I might have to change the cable, the screen or both.

I would say, the identical situation. Mine happened 4 days before the end of my warranty, but since I wasn't home and didn't have another pc to go to internet, I notified ASUS a few days after the warranty was gone... and now I'm trying to get them to take it as warranty, but I doubt even the managers will accept. It is much easier to say "bad luck" and leave me hanging.
    Anyway... I'll do it myself.

I read somewhere that the LCD cable is the problem. Does anyone know where can I get a working cable on a reasonable price?

I'm likely to order as well. I'm takign appart the PC tonight to try to disconnect/reconnect the cable. If not... order, cable and then order screen if necessary!

Haven't had a chance to do it... I've just gotten back to work after holidays and it's pretty mad around here. I did just the screen end: no luck. I need to do the GPU end.
I'll definitely post here when I do it. Not likely until Sunday...

Are you just using yours with an external monitor?

This is a no go, the shop only uses DHL as shipping and the shipping doubles the price, the shipping is too high :(

Yes I am using the laptop with an external monitor, Fallout New Vegas been playing good, so the VGA seems ok.

I reconnected the LVDS cable on both ends -> no good.

Now after I reassembled the laptop, the Windows does not start up, after the Asus logo just a white cursor keeps flashing at the top left corner, but nothing happens. I can enter the BIOS but can't seem to find anything related to this problem in there.

(Just to be sure I reinstalled both hard drives too, but nothing happened and in the BIOS I can see both of them on Port 0 and 4 and it also writes the 8 GB RAM correctly)

    Any ideas?

I tried to boot from a Win install disc, but same thing happens, I jsut get a white cursor...

ps: it seems ok now. While testing the cable I booted the laptop still being apart without HDDs and it seems it affected the BIOS, by restoring the BIOS back to default settings, the laptop works now.

Long story short: seems either the screen or the LVDS cable needs to be changed.

thanks for the update. I still need to find some time. I've told myself that I'd do it tomorrow night, but... we'll see. Yeah, the shipping stinks, but I haven't found another source in Europe. Unless I order both the cable and the screen in which case the shipping is relatively more bearable ... but if I only need a cable, I'll end up with a screen that I don't need...

If you find another source for the cable, let me know. I'll be looking on my side.

If anyone knows of another place to find the cable (we are both in Europe), it would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, can anyone tell us if this cable is specific for G73? I don't know much about LCD's for notebooks, but isn't this a standard cable? Perhaps it's easier to find a Dell, HP or generic cable that works just as well...

    @DRevan

    did you check this out?
    Asus G73 AUO LVDS TEFLON CABLE Kábel - 14G22100300G - asusalkatresz.hu

There seems to be an asuspart.fr store in France, but the site has bugs (on many browsers) and there is no basket or checkout mechanism to order. I've contacted them by email to see if they are actually open for business.

Hello. I am pretty sure it is screen my friend. I remember couple guys here had to buy new screen s after this kind of problem.
If you have other laptops around you that are not older than your g73 then you could try and test screen of them. At does not need to be 17 inch as long as it has 40pin connector.

I think you are right. It's likely the screen.

I've been looking at buying a screen replacement and got from a currently active thread that I should be ordering the AUO B173HW01 V5 matte screen.

So far, no matter which site I contact on this has a little line "We may ship a 100% compatible part." I get this from shops in France (where I'm located), UK, Germany... I just called a shop in UK. They were very polite and helpful and after a few seconds looking told me that if I ordered today I would likely get the LG screen "identical in all respects, same colours, quality, etc". I asked what I could do to get what I actually would order... "nothing you can do, I'm afraid". ... Wow! ... thanks...

Anyone have a secret to share on how to get *really* the AUO screen?

I'm writing the same thing on two threads, so here I'll just say that I got the screen, installed it, and it works fine. It's not as beautiful as I expected reading this forum, but it has no dead pixels or colored pixels that I can find and has decent angles, decent colors and seems to be reactive (still testing and getting used to it).

see the other thread (sorry, I'm terrible at linking across threads) about G73JH screen replacement for my feedback on the screen change (btw, I didn't change the cable at all).

I ordered that v5 AUO screen too from a local lcd screen seller, I hope it worth the total 140 eur investment.
I will be happy even if it has the same colors as the Hannstar with the exception that it does not have banding. The Hannstar had terrible color banding from dark to light in games and movies too.

Good. Let's see how it will work for you.

After a few days, I must say I'm still happy with the new matte screen but still think that my original Hannstar had nicer colors and no flaws like bands, etc (did I get lucky with my particular screen?)
Also, use the calibration posted in the thread on this forum. It really is nice and much better than what I managed with splendid or windows color calibration.

I've installed the AOU panel, I started it up first before puting in the screws, it was ok, but after reassembling it, the panel looks like this: AUO panel

Did it die after just 1 start-up?!
