Sorry if this is in the wrong section, I didn't really see anything else related to shipping/resellers.

Anyways back to the point, I am interested in purchasing a G73JH, and XoticPC looked like a good reseller, but as far as I know XoticPC is located in United States and I am currently in Canada, so I was wondering what I would have to pay (duty, taxes, etc.) to ship a 1700$ laptop across the border. I heard somewhere that if you use the express shipping option that some charges are removed. Is this true? If not is there any other solutions to avoiding all the costly charges?

Also, does anyone know any resellers in Canada that sell the G73JH and allow you to customize it (similar to the system XoticPC uses)?

    Thanks.

I would avoid buying from Canada since they spike up prices on technology by 10-30%. I recommend GenTechPC ([email protected]) (where I buy from) - both customer service and shipping was 10/10. They're located in California (I'm from Ontario).

As for shipping, it's about 50$~ for standard UPS, or 150$~ for Expedite. The Expedite shipping cost includes the brokerage fee (UPS pays it for you). I have no idea what the brokerage fees are these days since I expedited mine, since I'm a very impatient person :p

Nice to see you again haha. It's also nice to see a fellow Canadian who has knowledge and answers to my problems.

I did hear that ordering with Expedite covered brokerage, but I was slightly skeptical about that. I guess they were right after all. Fortunately I have no problem paying for Expedite, and I'm not actually ordering it for the extremely fast shipping, just for the sheer fact I don't have to pull out another hundred to two hundred dollars just for brokerage. I do live all the way over in Atlantic Canada so the shipping costs might change (why don't I live on the west coast?).

This might be a stupid question (I rarely purchase off the internet) but when ordering across the border do you have to pay taxes from the United States and Canada or just the United States?

Also, what does GenTech have over XoticPC? Just curious because I really liked the way XoticPC looked but if GenTech really is better than I'll have to take your advice.

One more question, now that the G73JH-B1 is out (apparently it's replacing the discontinued A1 and A2 models) should I purchase that one?

Thanks for all your useful advice.

EDIT: I also like XoticPC for the sheer fact that you can get them to apply thermal compound (I'm very paranoid about the whole overheating issue) and you have the option of installing the Intel® Advanced-N 6200 card.

I also sometimes wonder why I don't live on the West Coast of Canada. Here on the East, it's 'smog-central', meanwhile BC was voted the #1 best/healthiest place to live in North America for many years in a row!

What I like about GenTech is I find they treat every customer like an individual and not a number, plus, shipping gets processed super fast. I had ordered an MSI from them a couple months ago and it was thermal pasted + shipped in 24hrs. If you're worried about pasting + wireless card upgrade, they do it too ;)

    As for your model selection:
    Asus Notebooks: GenTech PC Store
The JW is actually the same price and comes with USB 3.0, a better stock pasting job, a roomier interior which proved to give lower temps, and a better video card on DX11 games and beyond.

I can't thank you enough for your help. I'll seriously consider GenTech and the JW model as well, provided it doesn't cost too much more than the JH.

EDIT: The G73 models seem to be slightly cheaper on XoticPC (maybe because of the cash discount), but I'll still consider GenTech. My only worry is ordering with Expedite and then when it gets here I am presented a list of all the brokerage fees I am required to pay.

Would also recommend gentech, ken is very helpful and they seem to ship faster, xotic is often backordered for weeks. If you pay expedited it covers all brokerage so you just sign at the door and pay the taxes (13%, f'ing canada). There is no duty on computers.

Funny thing with the states is that depending on the dollar, you can get it quicker, cheaper and still retain warranties ect. You'd think canada would wake up and stop overcharging our own people for buying our own stuff, but nope...

We stock nearly all of our ASUS laptops, they are seldom back ordered (unless you are referring to Pre Ordered laptops that most resellers are back ordered on or when demand could not be kept up with back during the peak G73JH ordering time.) At this time we still stock the G73JH A1/A2 along with the new G73JW.

Here is a good reference for estimated GST/PST in Canada

An issue people have with your company was brought up in another thread.

G53JW Pre-Orders (before the website correction):

    - The G53JW was originally posted with 8GB of RAM and 500GB HD
    - Customers pre-ordered it
    - The G53JW specs ended up actually being 6GB of RAM and 750GB HD
    - GenTech (and perhaps others) said they would cover the 8GB of RAM and keep the stock 750GB HD
    - You on the other hand are covering the 8GB of RAM, but removing the stock 750GB HD and replacing it with a 500GB HD from your shop, so the customer loses out on 250GB.

Forgive me if I'm incorrect, but many people that pre-ordered it from you have claimed this in previous threads and if it is in-fact correct, I can understand why people would be angry and it's not a very honest business.

That user you are speaking of is getting the 750GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive and 8GB of Ram option. There was some obvious confusion with this.

Okay. As long as this was done for all pre-orders before the listing change and not just this individual, I'm happy for them.

15% here in Nova Scotia lol. Oh well that's Canada for you. As long as there is no brokerage I'm happy.

Anyways thank you guys for all your help and advice. It is greatly appreciated.

Well, I know that I'm one of the folks who pre-ordered when the specs listed were 8 gb ram and a 500 gb hard drive, and after speaking with Justin, I am in fact receiving the upgrades and none of the downgrades. I haven't seen anyone else with the same confusion I had, but Justin made sure to clear everything up for me. :)

Almost all resellers (including GenTechPC) will offer the same 2-3% cash discount price. In addition, when you decide which US reseller to buy from, make sure they are shipping your laptop to you via USPS. This will decrease your customs/duties/brokerage fees compared to UPS and/or Fedex.

USPS may have slight decreased rates but they are much less reliable then UPS or Fed Ex when shipping outside the US. You may save a few bucks but could be waiting for your package much longer. :(

I assume, that the link there is for ONLY the brokerage costs, and not taxes on the laptop ... unless you actually remit GST/HST/PST to the Feds/Provinces?

Regarding reliability, it's true USPS can be iffy, especially for international First-class and Priority Mail shipping. However, Express Mail is a whole different story (at least for me). I sell hundreds of items per month on eBay and shipping Express Mail internationally has never caused any problems with my buyers with the one exception where a package was 1 business day late. Lucky? Maybe. But given its track record and how it's cheaper for both the sending and receiving parties, it would make more sense to continue using that service.

Hello, I'm currently staying at London Ontario for about 4 months and wanted to get a G73JH or JW as well. My question is, since I'm here only for a short time and I will be going back to Europe, how do I get the taxes back once I leave? Also from waht I've seen as G73JH prices in Canada, you can get a new one for 1699 CAD$ from CanadaComputers and you will probably save some money on the delivery.
