Just wondering if anyone keeps the Turbo Mode on continually, or if it should only be turned on when playing a high end Game or something?

Personally I always keep it on.

Though I can't say whether this is good or bad I would think with regards to the GPU it wouldn't matter much since generally it would only be taxed when running a game (or any graphics-intensive application).

I also vaguely recall reading a review (prior to purchasing) where it more or less said there was no reason not always run in turbo mode.

It's not about the GPU, it's about the CPU. In my experience, Turbo Mode should be called, "Gimmick Mode". My G73 is actually slower here with it enabled.

Did you, guys, ever noticed that there is supposed to be a windows gadget for P4G? If you go to the C:\Program Files\P4G, then you will see that there are 2 gadget folders there. One gadget is called "Smart33" and the other is called "Turbo33". Apparently they are supposed to let you do the Turbo mode with one click on the gadget.

There is an executable in P4G folder called "GadgetInstaller.exe" and if you run "gadget installer -install" from command prompt, then it's supposed to install those gadgets.

BUT it doesn't work. The installer does not install gadgets. You can install them manually by moving those gadget folders to C:\Users\<YOUR_USER_NAME>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\.

Then just add the gadgets to the screen in the usual way. Still, however, those gadgets for some reason do not function at all, i.e. clicking on the gadget slider does not move a little slider to "ON" position.

I would be interested in a solution to make turbo gadget work if anyone will ever find such a solution.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but what's wrong with just pushing the button next to the keyboard?

With a 920 keeping it on makes it unstable. You need to either adjust your multipliers when using it or just keep it off.

Under stress at the higher frequency the multipliers do go lower. If not under stress it should achieve higher speeds. But you are right, for everyday use it is pretty useless. "Stress" is defined here as a full load on all four cores.

Well, pressing the P4G button switches the profile, but as far as I know the "extreme turbo" option in the "performance" profile does not stick in P4G and resets after every reboot.

What are you referring to? My G73JH A1 has none of the things you mention here.

I'm a little confused. What "P4G" button? Do you mean the "Turbo" button? By "profile" do you mean "plan"? Both the Power4Gear Hybird and the "Power Options" using the same plan are the same thing, even their "Advanced power settings" are the same. I don't see a "performance" profile (or plan) and I don't see a "extreme turbo" option. I must be looking in the wrong place.

Ok, it's a little difficult to explain in words, so I made a screenshot. You can see what I mean under "extreme turbo." And yes, power "profile" == "plan".

Also, I don't know if your laptop has some different turbo button, but mine has a button that looks like a "little running man" which switches between power profiles/plans.

Keep ASUS's turbo mode off. Intel's Turbo conflicts with it (it's complicated)

Okay, so you are talking about Fn+Space, which isn't a turbo button. Instead it switches between Power plans. I was talking about the actual Turbo mode button, which looks like a tachometer in the upper-left corner (middle button). Which does the same thing as enabling or disabling the Turbo mode in the Power4Gear Hybird.

As to the Turbo mode options, you must be using a different version. As you can see, the stock version doesn't have that option:

Ok, I see now that profile/plan switching button is different from the turbo button.

I was mainly wondering if it was possible to make the windows gadget turn the Asus's extreme turbo in a single click. I guess that gadget is for turning the "turbo boost" and not the Asus's boost.

I don't think conflict is the right word because one is multipliers and the other is the bclk frequency.

yes, but the end result is lower performance unless you're using 4(maybe 3) or more threads

I actually found turning on Turbo mode made my 3DMark06 and 3DMark Vantage benchmarks lower.. so with that in mind, I've always had Turbo Off.

Don't worry, this won't drop your CPU speed. If you look at CPU-Z, you can still see that the CPU is clocking to 2.8GHz even with Turbo Off.

What version are you using for P4G? One I have is from Asus Support downloads page, under category Notebook, Apps, P4G Hybrid

I think part of the problem is that depending on what you have installed on your notebook, the results can change. If you REALLY want a performance increase though, get rid of every piece of Asus installed software [minus the ATK package], and then use something like Ccleaner to tidy up the registry. I can't speak for 3dmark [I usually have too much going on to run comparison benchmarks] but I DO know that I saw a consistent 150-200 point increase in the FFXIV benchmark a few months ago when I was tweaking out the system. . just from having the turbo boost on [you can set it in BIOS]

It has nowhere near the effect on system performance that removing the Asus software packages, but it's still a nice little push : )

Keep Turbo Mode off. It's useless and does more harm than good.
