Hi I did a clean install of windows 7 ultimate and installed all the latest drivers as well as flashed my bios to 2.11, but the internet is still a POS frankly. My friend's laptop (HP) gets 4/5 bars in my room and connections flawlessly everytime. For mine, sometimes I can't even get connection 2 feet away from the router (which I've used for the past 2 years without ever having a problem). Currently it's working in my room which is some distance from the router with only 1/5 bars. Oftenly I just get "Can't connect" no matter how close I am to the router. I have the Atheros card with the latest drivers. Is there any solution or am I going to have to buy a USB wifi dongle?

First upgrade I got for my laptop was replacing the wifi card with an Intel 6200 @ provantage.com

Yeah, the Atheros card is often found in netbooks. Pretty cheap item to stick in a flagship model.

how easy is the upgrade? open trap, take out old, put new in, install drivers and voilà?

my atheros is working very well with dlink dir-655... and thanks to my geek neighbours, I have more than 20 wifi networks going through my house...
