    Is it possible to get a G73JH output a 2560x1600 resolution? I know you need displayport to do this, or DL DVI, neither of which the G73 has. But is there like an adapter from VGA to DL DVI or displayport available? Or is there maybe another solution like getting an external GPU or something?

    Thanks.

    I think you're stuck with FHD, but you might try the HDMI->DVI (iirc, it's just a pin configuration). Read up on HDMI spec, do some googling. The answer is out there (I've read it now ... but it was sooo easy to find I'm only going to point you in the right direction).

    I would go HDMI, most if not all new monitors or TV all have HDMI.

    HDMI will not do 2560 on the monitor receiving side

    Who says?

    HDMI supports all resolutions currently out there for consumer monitors. It only matters that the HDMI revision is high enough. Considering the G73 is pretty new I am sure it has 1.3+

    so now that we have established that it will not work with the laptop's native features, is it maybe possible to have some external solution? like an external graphics card or whatever.

    and if this is not possible, can you guys recommend me a laptop that can support a 30" monitor with similar or better specs than the g73?

    edit: the monitor is a Dell wfp3008 btw

    did we establish that? I thought viciousXUMSC seemed to suggest otherwise?

    From the ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5870 GPU Specifications...

    Integrated dual-link DVI output with HDCP
    * Max resolution: 2560x1600

    Integrated DisplayPort output
    * Max resolution: 2560x1600

    Integrated HDMI 1.3 output with Deep Color, xvYCC wide gamut support, and high bit-rate audio
    * Max resolution: 1920x1200

    Integrated VGA output
    * Max resolution: 2048x1536

    Grab the soldering iron and wire up a DisplayPort or DVI port :)

    Are you being sarcastic or do you really think this is a possibility? Will it be as easy as soldering a DisplayPort to the GPU and it will just straight up work?

    Maybe a bit facetious :)

    I don't see why it wouldn't be possible, but I imagine it wouldn't be easy. I don't know what circuitry is needed between GPU pins and ports, but I bet all the information is available out there.

    It's a small chip ... would be delicate work!

    Also may need firmware (vBIOS) change.

    I'll let someone else tackle this project...

    I have never soldered a thing in my life and would have to let someone else do it. But i am interested in doing this mod and documenting it for the community, but i would need detailed instructions on how to do this.

    Look under video supported modes
    HDMI max is 1080p

    So I was wrong. From HDMI best you can get is 1920x1080 not even 1200.

    U2711 is slightly better, max supported HDMI input is 1920x1200.

    There has been a wealth of research on the web on 30" monitors using HDMI and not one of them supports 2560 under HDMI, despite any claims that 1.3 and above "should" support 2560 bandwidth. The monitors don't recognize any higher res coming from that connector.

    That is really odd and kind of dumb, but I would think you can get around that limitation with a HDMI --> DVI adapter since they are directly interchangable in most cases.

    HDMI spec supports that res, if your video card does too, then just coveting to DVI for the sake of the monitor being happy should solve the problem.

    how would that work ViciousXUSMC, if the HDMI out can do 1920x1200 max
