I recently received my G73 and love it. I installed an Intel 160GB X25. This has a 250MB read capability.
In my m17x at first it gave me only like 200MB read speeds. Intel came out with the fireware upgrade and it then shot right to 250MB read speeds.
I installed this drive into my G73 and loaded win7 64bit. The bios is set to IHCP and I ran the Intel Toolbox on it. I installed all the drivers from the disk.
The problem I am having is I'm back down to 200MB read speeds.
I of course want to get it back up to 250.
Anyone have any idea why?
Thanks in advance.

I had this problem too. Go to Device manager and look at driver details for your IDE/ATA controller. Make sure it doesn't say Microsoft. If so, download the latest Intel Storage drivers and it will boost the performance.
-
It says Intel PCHM SATA AHCI Controller 4 Port
Where would I get an updated driver from? -
Don't put too much weight on the small file sequential read speeds. If you do then realize that the Intel drive is one of the worst for sequential write speeds.
-
Right click that, then go to Properties/Driver and what does it say for "driver provider"?
Also drake, the 200/250 is random reads, not sequentials. -
No! No! No!
If it were random the number would be in the 60s. -
Woops, you're right! At any rate, he still needs to make sure the Intel driver is handling his storage controller.

ok now you're going emoticon crazy.
Heard any news on a TRIM supported Intel driver yet? -
I'm running the exact same Diskmark benchmark on this as I did on my m17x.
-
I'm following your lead!
Not yet. Anand had a blurb on it recently but I haven't had the time to research it and test it.
That's fine, but could you please look at the info I asked you to find? -
Mandrake - did you pop your Intel SSD into your G73 yet? I know we bought our SSDs at the same time.
-
yes i'm sorry it all says Intel. I installed the Matrix drivers.
-
Better yet run this program and post a screen shot. LINK
-
Nope. My Intel drive is sitting on my desk right now collecting dust.

This is what I get

Try the Microsoft driver and test speeds again.

quick question for ssd users:
- did you move your browser cache file out of the ssd to another disk or ram disk?
- did you fully disable the paging file or keep it at the minimm of 400mb on the ssd?
- did you setup a ram disk?
thanks for the help, i'd like to ensure that my drive does not die prematurely -
This is what I got -- where do I get the microsoft driver from? Just uninstall the Intel Matrix one and let it reinstall drivers itself?

It would be a long time before it would affect the life of the blocks. -
yes.

The microsoft driver will pass Trim commands without you having to run Intel toolbox, but it will reduce your performance numbers.
Maybe check for an updated Intel Storage driver package. I think I found mine on the Intel website. -
I uninstalled the Matrix App. Then I went to manually install a driver figuring I can pick the Microsoft one from the list. In the list I saw another Intel Driver. I picked that and here is what I got.
God I love this laptop.Attached Files:

OK next noob question - Is it posible to get a wireless card that can connect at 300MB speeds with only a 2 wire setup?
My current cards cnnects solid at 150MB, but I'd like to get it to 300 is possible...
Did I mention I love this laptop? -
Congrats on getting it to work.
Look into the wireless card in my sig.
-
Mandrake is this what you have?

Yes. get it from here though.

32 bucks shipped. -
Yes but I bought mine at provantage like even posted.

You want to use the Rapid Storage Technology drivers (v9.5.6.1001) not MSM:
http://www.station-drivers.com/page/intel raid.htm
Just remember to schedule the Intel SSD Toolbox to TRIM your drive once a week. -
Perfect just ordered it --- Thanks guys for all your help...
Since I'm on a roll -- How about a full size wireless mouse? I don't want one of those small notebook mice, the catch is I want it to have one of the small nano receivers. I want it to have some side buttons also so I can use it for gaming. Every Nano receiver mouse I see is notebook size.
Any suggestions? -
I need a new mouse. One that will charge via usb like the xbox controller does.
-
That would rock
-
I'm not up to speed on the wireless technologies, but can someone breakdown the advantages of the 6200 vs the stock Atheros card please?
On topic- I have the Intel X-25M G2 80GB what is currently the "Best" driver to use. I did do the firmare update for the drive and also have the toolbox set to TRIM weekly. -
intel RST 9.6 drivers and don't have it trim weekly because trim works along with the OS.
-
Thanks for the driver info.
In regard to TRIM I may have mispoken. I don't have the lappy with me @ work but I recall setting the toolbox to do something weekly. I don't recall it specifically being TRIM. -
You don't need the Intel Toolbox with Trim but its a nice to have addition. TRIM is automatic in the standard MS AHCI driver or the Itel one detailed above. There is no improvement in performance between the two and the intel is good for RAID drives as it is being shown that its garbage collection works very well at returning ssd speeds after deletions
-
I installed the 9.6 driver and noticed that my SSD driver is still the stock intel 6/1/2006 or whatever but my "intel controller" shows the 9.6 installed. That is correct i hope...
-
Check the SATA controller driver instead.
-
I ment to say SATA controller not "intel" My speeds look to be on par with others that have the same SSD 245 read/85 write. Win7 loads in 15 seconds.
I'm very happy.
