    Hi All
I just discovered that the Intel i7-840QM is selling for around 160-210 USD on Ebay. As it has the same socket and TDP, would it run on our G73JH?
The CPU should be some good 15% faster thanks to it's higher clock. Not sure yet if it's worth the price though.
The 940xm would be even nicer, but that one is 3 times the price :(
So yeah, what do you think?
Oh and how hard would it be to replace it?

    thanks

Ok I read the first 10 pages of the 920xm purchase thread and I'm still not much more intelligent as before :(
Do you have made any benchmarks of games with before/after exchange of the cpu?

    720QM 4x1.6ghz 3DMark06 3000pts

    920XM 4x3.2ghz 3Dmark06 5800pts.

    :D

Keep reading that thread the 920XM is not the same as QM you have no restrictions in place and you must understand it like I had to before buying it. At stock you will see an average increase in performance but it comes to life with Throttlestop when you unlock the multipliers and instead of having 4 cores at 1.6ghz with the 720QM you can double it and have 4 cores running at 3.2ghz :) At stock it will only run at 2.0ghz so to be able to gain from it you must do your research.

I explain here how to overclock it.

That's until you start OC'ing it. Then the sky is the limit (or until it bursts into flames).

840QM = Waste of money cause the multipliers and TDP are locked.
920XM/940XM = Way to go, 3.2~4GHz on 4 Cores NO PROBLEM.

Hmm overclocking, something I'm actually not all to fond of doing it in a laptop. But thanks for the threads :) I think I have the needed information now do decide.

The XM is made for it and it is not really overclocking as it is the same as every other QM chip only that this one has the ability to choose what consumption and speed you wish it to run at. If overclocking is not your thing then maybe its not a good idea but the upgrade from 720QM to 820QM is worthless.

The thing is, I see some around 15% increase in FPS in games. Gaming is the main reason for the possible upgrade. But 250$ and around 3 hours of carefull work for sometimes 15%, I don't know (yet). Not to forget, now I still have precious warranty on it ;)

Sorry but whoever told you that is wrong rarely will the CPU ever make a difference to the FPS in games the only one that does visibly is StarCraft 2 and Civ 5 for instance. Every game is different and the majority of games always rely on the GPU more than the CPU. The 720QM was and is able to handle all games out at the moment it still has a place in my heart because it was awesome at release and an increase of 260mhz difference is not going to do anything when 4 cores are active.

The only upgrade feasible is the 920XM because you are able to run it at 3.2ghz over all 4 cores then CPU intensive games like Battlefield 3 or Skyrim see a slight difference in performance but the jump from 1.6ghz (720QM) to 1.86ghz (840QM) will do absolutly nothing.

I know this because I overclocked my 720QM to 2ghz using SetFSB & the real life performance increase was not visible.

I was actually talking difference of the 720qm to the 920xm :)
The 840qm is already out of my mind ;)
But yeah, a "slight difference" is probably not enough to take the risk of breaking the machine. At least not while it's still in warranty.

840QM is a slight difference 920XM is double the performance. Stick two 720QM together with super glue ;) A superb upgrade if ever there was one for a bargain price.

It scores only 500-1000 3DMark points less than my 2760QM in 06 and Vantage and could probably beat if pushed beyond its limits. Although you would need 90watts to beat my 45watts haha and a lot more heat produced ;)
