G73JH beeping when idle?

Hi,
I just noticed a very slight, but noticeable beeping sound from my laptop.
I searched this forum for the similar problems, and I could only find one person with the same problem. He says it may be coming from the graphic card.

As far as i know, it is not there when doing graphic intensive tasks, but happens (not always, but occasionally) when I am surfing the web or just idling.

I called Asus and they told me it was a "routine check" by the GPU. I don't know what that means.. he says he never heard of this problem before, so how does he know what routine check sounds like?

It is not so much a beep, but more like... a sound made by scratching a glass surface with a pin.. or something like that.

Do any of you guys get this sound too? It is very high pitched so even though I try to ignore it by playing music or something i can still hear it... it's driving me nuts!!

You mean like a buzzing kinda noise?

Check your hard drive with SeaTools just in case it's that. I'm on my second seagate 500gb laptop hard drive now. The first one was always beeping for no reason. It was related to a power management issue and Seagate won't fix it for some reason.
I'm not saying it's definitely your hard drive, but it seems a little strange that a GPU would beep if you ask me. Should be under warranty if you think you need it replaced.

 

Try to run some intensive 3D applicatoion with sound muted. If this sound will be louder than before. It is obviously you GPU. Particularly chokes on your video card PCB. It is nothing to worry about.

 

OP: Yeah - that was probably me. But:
- I don't know what it is, but maybe it is the CPU instead...

I didn't specify which type of CPU i had in my previous post, but I got the i7 720qm variant.

It appears whenever the computer is idle, especially when on battery mode (not plugged in) - and it is very annoying!

Oh and as for example when it happens:
- Not when normal web page browsing, but its gone whenever I play a youtube video (flash) lulz.

Thank you, I ran the program and seems like it is not the hardware's problem..

 

I simply believe that there's just a component (either CPU or GPU likely) that does not receive enough power, as when you plug it in the sound disappears or when you do something that requires graphical processing.

It must probably be some kind of power saving action/ protocol in order to save battery lifetime.

Also, the problem is also present with other "cheaper" laptops.

 

Just discovered that my Best Buy G73 suffers from the same high pitch whining too when it is running on battery power. However, the moment I plug it back in the sound goes away instantly.

I have also confirmed that running a 3D app on battery makes the sound less noticeable.

Maybe this is a topic for Gary Key to investigate once he fixes the vBIOS, BIOS, Catalyst Drivers, TIM and Synaptics touch pad...
