Hi all. Im a new member to this forum and i'd just like to say that the knowledge here is amazing and im glad i stumbled upon this site. Now, let me address the problem at hand. I just bought an Asus G73 JH from BestBuy about 2 months ago. My GPU runs hot. I have the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 with driver version 8.683.0.0. When playing BFBC2, i reach the 114 degree celcius (i think thats what it is) value and my computer overheats. I can play BFBC2 with a fan base and after blowing out the fan vents for 3 plus hours while gaming but temps are still over 100 degrees Celsius. Im not too tech savvy but i do see a thermal re-paste in my future. I will do this after college, in about 5 weeks, and i have Dynex paste ready. From what i hear, its not great but it should be a lot better than the factory. Currently when running Furmark in 1600x900 full screen setting, my gpu temps reach about 102 to 104 degrees Celsius in about 3 minutes. I tried updating to driver 10.3 and this did not work (i got the verticle lines) so i flashed the BIOS to the current version (213 or something like that) and re-installed drivers 10.3 (using driver sweeper in safe mode to remove old drivers and all that) and this seemed to be a big improvement. I ran furmark for 6 minutes with the GPU reaching only 95 degrees Celsius, but again the vertical lines occurred. I tried drivers 10.4 (here on the site) but these wouldnt install at all ( the display appeared as tho there were no drivers). Any help would be greatly appreciated! I restored to the version 8 drivers and i still have BIOS at 213.

You need to also update the video BIOS. See my signature link below, and you will need to make a bootable USB flash drive formatted for FAT32. scroll up to the original post for instructions.

Dang! Thanks for the quick response! That makes sense, thanks. Now may i ask, is there an advantage to the vBIOS version I use? i found 93vbiosa and i know that there are a couple other custom vBIOSes here. With my high gpu temps would overclocking be a bad idea? what do you recommend? Thanks again!

First get the vBios, you might need to repaste your GPU as well if you get high temps. Given your tmeps, OCing would be a bad idea but you probably have either a loose screw on the heatsink or degraded thermal paste.
There's a video on youtube on how to flash both the bios and vBios. Since you already did the bios, skip to the vBios part.
Here's one by asus, there's another one by one of the members on the forums which i was looking for but haven't found yet.

EDIT: It seems the video by Xellon isn't available anymore. Anyways click the link for vBios in Chastity's sig and take a look at the video if you need. -

That package just has the rom and bat file. As for the others, since I don't know exactly which ones you are referring to, it's best to stick to the 2 packs I mentioned. You are free to play with it afterwards, as to confirm your issues are now stable. -
Wow. you guys are good. Thanks for the help! flashed vBIOS to the asus stabe release (93 i think) and installed Catalyst 11.3 drivers... works flawlessly so far. I ran a furmark stress test for about 10 min and the GPU temp never passes 98C. this was without cooling pad and exhaust vents were close to the wall. Any other ideas to help reduce GPU temp? besides underclocking and undervolting i mean. Thanks again for the great help! so fall everything great, played 1+ hours BFBC2 at max settings
Abnd Tijo thanks for the vid link. extremely helpful for a guy like me who prefers to not touch any BIOS-related material lol -
98C is still way hot man. Blow out the back with compressed air. Sounds like you need a repaste tho.
G73JH bestbuy model, driver fix?
