    The 6990M had a limited life span, I don't think the same applies to 7970M/8970M. I owned both 7970M and 8970M and neither had any problems.

    All cards have some issues but the 69xx was the worst for AMD.

    7970M has also been used for the longest time.
    7970M = 8970M = R9 M290X.
    Done via VBIOS update.

    I got one of the first batch of 7970M cards back in 2012, ran it with a 2740qm CPU at the time. It's amazing how much AMD are spreading the life of their chips. Pitcairn (the chip used on all the above listed cards) is getting an especially decent work out desktop and mobile.

    Old trick being play over again, and each time with a different name, that's all.
    AMD better return with something new and original. :)

    With Nvidia doing the same thing as Intel's doing, it's hard for AMD.

    Hello all, it's been forever since I was last on here. I was one of the guys early on who did the upgrade when the 7970m came out who did the mod. The card is still working great and it's been like 3-4 years already.
    I thought I had a bad mobo and after purchasing a replacement, turned out it was wasn't the mobo but was in fact the ribbon cable from the palm rest that was shorting out the board causing problems.

    But anyways, the problem with the 7970m is the 2gb ram. The 8970 may not be much faster but does have 4gb of ram. I can not run Paragon at max settings in 1080. I'm looking to upgrade my video card either to 8970m or/and from what I see, I can also go with a M290x.

    The 8970m is going for $360

    When I search for the m290x, I see them listed as 8970m/m290x, why is that?

    Anyways I do want to do this upgrade the only issue will be having the modified vbios. I would assume I would have to blind flash again.

    Posted a picture of my current 7970m mod. https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/t31.0-8/1026095_10200878549901454_617024116_o.jpg
