    Cooling freak here again.

Just ordered my IC7 and was just wondering is there any aftermarket upgrades for the G73 stock fans? (Any links are appreciated) Would be very interested to know as I will replace them when she is opened up (hopefully for the last time)

Also I still haven't had a definitive reply regarding the thermal pads covering the GPU memory on the 5870M mine are looking a tad worn and I would be happier knowing that I have replaced them with some strong new ones. I notice that 3mm and 5mm are offered on the site im looking at any ideas on the size of the thickness? or should I just cut them myself.

    Thank you kindly.

Dont use anything over 1mm on vram chips. I changed mine with 1mm from 3M and are very satisfied with them. Probably three times better then original ones. Thermal conductivity of mines were 3.0 W/mK

Didn't know that there's this size thing before I repasted mine lol I used ICD24 for mine

He is referring to the thermal pads over the Vram on the card. This sounds about right to me as I believe the stock are about 1.5-2mm and they squeeze out of the sides of the heatsink I want best conductivity.

Picked up some 1mm which are 3.2 W/mk

Then you are good to go :). I remember when I have exchanged mine it had protecting foil on both side of pads and one extra foil on just one side so check and remove them all before applying pads.

Yup cheers for the info I have been stressing over if I should go for the 920XM but in the end decided that my 720QM is more than enough for just gaming but would like to see if I can get my temps right down and have a go pushing it up with SetFSB. Hence the repaste and im not happy with Arctic silver even after several attemps I think I can push it lower.

The application of the Thermal pads does it provide better coverage in strips across the length of the Vram modules as its done as stock or do separate cut pieces for each one benefit more?

My only worry is after hearing stories of the contact not being made and the GPU module getting fried it worries me slightly, the only reason im replacing them is because they are in poor condition and feel that I would be better off replacing them when I do this repaste.

Any ideas on the strip or single piece on each module application?

I have used strips on mine. Same like original ones. And 1mm is perfect I think becouse pads are very soft so with litle presure upon them you get proper contact with heatsink which is important for heat transfer.

What temps you get on ypur cpu?

Im getting quite good temps but my ambient temps are also very low. GPU is idling at 49/50oC maxing out around 94oC MEM(IO) highest temp at extreme burn in and although I know these are good I reckon IC7 will give me better results in the long run.

Instead of replacing the fans you could try a vent mod. This is simply sealing the gap between the GPU heatpipe radiator and exhaust fan with some duct tape. In theory this should smooth airflow out the exhaust vent and keep the hot air from going back into the laptop. I don't know if anyone has tried this yet on the G73 though.

When I checked the stock thermal pads they seemed to match up to the .5mm pads I bought, unless the stock ones compressed that much.

I have and yes the airflow is cleaner but the difference in temp is minor if any difference.

They do compress a lot especially as the gap should be minimal in the first place. The 0.5mm will just have a higher thermal conductivity and should conduct better with the heatsink. Even so VRAM heat is not a big problem.
