Hey guys, my G73 has been freezing randomly. I can't seem to notice any patern on the programs I'm running when it freezes. Usually I'm just browsing at chrome or firefox, while chatting on msn messenger. Computer freezes and wathever sound was playing gets on a 1sec eternal loop.

I'm considering formating it, since I've had the laptop for about 16 months and I never formated it, it still has the OS and programs ASUS sent it with.

So, I ask you, is everything in this screenshot the default settings?

    Thanks.

Sounds like your drive is starting to go to me or there's a driver or program not agreeing with your setup. Do a clean install and see if it helps.

That looks like defaults to me. I don't see anything out of whack. Why would it not be set to defaults if you don't mind my asking?

There are a couple of threads related to random freezing. It's normally a software issue. However, if you don't mind and are technically able, a good clean install is never a bad idea. You get that "new computer" smell back because everything runs so crisply for a while. It gets rid of "windows rot".

Previous versions of Windows always decayed over time for me. Windows 7 seems to be far better in this respect but I'm sure it still does it too.

I'm asking if everything is default because I messed a little with clocks, but I didn't remember if I set them back to default settings. Thought overclocking might be causing the lock ups.

I'm cool with doing a clean install, done that a lot in my previous computers. Was just lazy till now.

I've also checked the freezing topics. Updated my realtek driver, etc. I also think I should do a chkdsk, but it takes so long =(

What's really strange to me is that it froze a lot about 3-4 weeks ago for a couple hours, I restarted it sometimes, deleted some recently installed apps and then everything was fine. Then it happened again last week and again today. It's not constant, it's just very very random.

Definitely go for a fresh windows installation along with updated drivers bios and vbios.
I see a pattern here, Asus default os is riddled with all sorts of mystic things. I had alot of problems with it, it lasted only 2 days thought.

My OEM hard drive died two weeks ago. It would thrash the hard drive for five to eight minutes straight and get very unresponsive. I replaced it with a 750GB drive. I've had an overheat problem that forced me to repaste. That doesn't cause freezing in my experience. The computer just shuts down instantly like you pulled the battery and power jack. If you have a Momentus XT with old firmware it will stutter a lot. Random complete freezing is not something I've ever seen on my JH.

I hope you don't have a GPU or CPU failing. :( A clean install seems to be the right thing to do first. Hopefully that fixes it because the other possibilities cost money.

Seagate HDD's seem to not last long from what I've seen. The longest any one I've ever had last is a year and a half. While every WD and Samsung drive I've ever had still works.

Hasn't frozen for ~1hour. Before posting here, it froze 5 times in about 10minutes.

Maybe I can get another few weeks without it freezing again.

Btw, my BIOS and VBIOS are updated and my idle temps are 50°C CPU, 34°C HDs, 55°C GPU.

I still might do a clean install. Just need to backup some stuff.

How would I proceed if I wanted to test my CPU/GPU for hardware failure? I guess a chkdsk + some programs with SMART features could diagnose my HDs for bad blocks or wathever, but I have no ideia how to test my CPU and GPU.

And guys, thanks for posting and helping. Much appreciated <3

Furmark will hammer your GPU to the limit. It should heat up over a period of ten minutes and then hit a max and hold. My GPU idle temp is 52C which isn't great but that's what it is. I had repasted with IC Diamond but I had to send it in for an RMA later and it was put back to factory paste.

Once of those standard benchmarking suites will stress your CPU like 3DMark/PCMark. I haven't personally seen many JH owners around here having lots of CPU problems with the 720QM. Mostly when people have troubles, it's with the GPU. However yours is strange because you are getting freezes and most people get an instantaneous shutdown when the GPU bangs out.

If you really want to test a heat issue, google: intel burnin test.

For a G73JH type lappy, max setting, 8 threads.
Or, to make it cry, 7 threads + GPU folding.

If it will lock, either will do it.

Bios+Vbios and a fresh install of win7pro (got rid of restore partition, reformatted to 4K clusters, minimal swap, no hibernate just sleep)

Run the burnin test, when it heats up and fans spin full blast (really loud) use
    quick bursts of compressed air.
