    Hi guys,
My fateful G73JH is having display issues.
I closed the lid to put the computer in sleep and when I woke it up a few hours later this was the screen
    [IMG]
The left side is as you see and the right side displays "correctly" just with psychedelic colors

If I plug an external monitor all is fine and I can game without problem so this tells me that the GPU itself appears to be fine.

I'm guessing it's either the screen itself or something between the GPU and the screen (cable, connector, etc)

I don't see any impact and bleeding usually associated with a damaged LCD.

    I'm stumped...

    Any help is welcome.

    Thanks.

Yeah that looks like LCD damage to me. Especially considering you tested with an external monitor and found that working ok. You could get inside and wiggle the LCD cable. It's not hard to get in there. There's probably a video out there.

A replacement LCD isn't terribly expensive if you need one.

I'm not familiar with the LCD cable. It is just a single cable or is there a board-like component attached to it ?

Yes it's a single cable running from the motherboard, through the hinge to the back of the LCD.

Thanks. I ordered a cable online. With luck it will do the trick.

I have a feeling for sure it was the cable.. one of my old laptops had the same/similar problem.. I sent it in to be repaired however hp just replaced everything in it (motherboard, palm rest, screen).. it's working good as new...

Did you check to see if it was just a seating issue first?

I would check the seating as well. But my money is on having to replace the LCD screen. Not a hard job, nor expensive. I did mine about 3 yrs. ago.

Since it's just opening the screen assembly itself and not the machine I agree. Same procedure as checking the cable to be fair.

Well the cable was a real pain in the ass to replace and unfortunatly that wasn't even the problem. I have the exact same problem with the new cable.
I tried to get my hand on an old screen to test out a different screen before buying a new one but the only screen I could get my hands on have a different connector. No luck there.

Guess it's time to order a new screen. The sad part is that I had one of the early HannStar HSD173PUW1 screens and from what I've read they appear to be the superior and almost impossible to find ones. There area lot of old discussion threads about the LG and AUO screens.

The AUO 17.3" 90% gamut screen is pretty decent but are getting hard to find too.

I replaced my screen with another Hannstar. I bought it from here. They're even cheaper now! I got a Hannstar by default. Too bad no one took up my bet! ;)

Although the Hannstar is definitely a great screen, the early ones that were used in our G73jh's back in '10 were defective. Mine only lasted until a few months after the warranty period.

I've never had a laptop screen die on me, but then again I do tend to pass them along fairly quickly too ^-^

I bought my screen for the same store. Definitly the best price in Canada considering the crappy exchange rate and shipping/import duties from ebay. Thanks for the tip.

I received a Chimei Innolux N173HGE-L11. Never heard of it but according to some forum post I found, that screen is supposed to be quite good.

I'll try to hook it up this evening and hope for the best. If this doesn't solve my problem than it's GPU-related and I'm out of luck.

Once you replace your screen, you'll be working. ;) You said the external monitor hooked up was fine. No problems with your GPU. This is a CLASSIC G73jh problem. My replacement screen has already outlived my original one! Woot!

    It works!
The screen work fine and I must say it is a very good looking screen.
The colors are bright, the images are very sharp it's definitly an upgrade.

My only pet-peeve is that the screen itself appears to be a hair thicker than my previous one so the screen bezel doesn't snap quite right in place. I'll allow it after all this trouble.

Have you considered overclocking the panel?

I didn't think you could overclock a panel.
Anyway I'm just happy to have everything back in working order.

Yes you can edit it in using AMD as well as Nvidia cards but i'm glad everything is working :)
