I just finished repasting the dying stock thermal paste on my G73JH (resulting in a 30C drop!!!) and find now that my keyboard backlight is not working. I tried my best to take the computer apart as best I could and put it back together how I found it, but nevertheless, the backlight doesn't work, anymore.

I've tried taking the keyboard off, again, and reconnecting the tiny ribbon cable, which I understand is the LED controller, but no luck. I did crinkle the keyboard aluminum foil quite a bit wrestling with the tape, despite my best efforts not to, and I also ended up witht he infamous one-more-screw-than-I-started with after I put the whole thing back together.

Basically my question is: is the only thing that controls the keyboard's LED lights the tiny ribbon cable on the keyboard, or could I have forgotten to plug something in elsewhere in the computer that powers the lights? Am I likely to have somehow killed my lights after wrestling with the tape (the ribbon cable is still intact)? Do I need to buy a new keyboard to fix this?

That narrow ribbon is the only thing that powers the backlight. It is very very easy to plug it in backward, though. That's what folks usually do to cause the lights to fail to work. Can you try flipping it over and plugging it in the other way even if it looks wrong to you?

That actually worked. The narrow ribbon has a pull tab that you would assume, being a pull tab, would be facing up (so you could pull on it). The pull tab side should go in facing down.

I also tried putting the cable in both ways earlier with the computer on to no avail. I had to power off the computer, but the cable in, and then turn it back on, and now it's working. Thanks!
