Hi there,
Just started getting a problem using USB drives with my G73JH.
Basically when copying files from internal hard drives to an external USB 2.0 drive it will work for awhile, then lock up mide transfer. Screen frozen, no noise, no error message, no response to any buttons or ctrl-alt-del.
This happens with different USB drives, as well as USB cables.
Haven't been using external drives for a couple of months, so not sure if it's just happened after my recent repaste or would have been happening before.
The computer has not locked or crashed at all doing anything else for the paste few days since the repaste.
I have only tried the one USB port, so will try a different one to rule that out.
Oh, this is while the computer is being left alone copying, on AC power, max performance scheme.
Advice on likely causes, or any settings to check would be appreciated.
Cheers.

SpicySi if it happens on all ports, try the drive on another computer.
Also see post 8 here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...b-mouse-complete-locks-up-usb-ports-fail.html if the drive works fine on another computer. -
Mine is a hard lock, rather than the port simply stopping working. Read in another thread to check windows event viewer, and found that the following occurs as the final act before the lockup:
The Portable Device Enumerator Service service entered the stopped state.
Strange as when it enters the stopped state the hard drive is busy copying!
Will do some reading on the Portable Device Enumerator Service, reckon I'm on the right track -
ThrottleStop may provide a workaround for your lockup issues. There appears to be a power management issue related to C States on some G73JH and JW models. See these threads:

I am having an issue with the left single USB port on my g73jh, it will show power to a device (ie optical mouse), but it will not recognize it. I can plug the same device into the 2 USB ports on the right hand side and the device will work as intended. I am trying to figure this out. My chipset drivers are up to date, I've tried the posted work around, I've tried to turn of legacy usb support in BIOS, nothing seems to work. I already had to send my laptop out to have the Motherboard fixed once already, and I am dreading to have to send this out again because Best Buy sucks and I don't want to be without my laptop for another month.
I am hoping that someone may be able to shine some light on this problem I am having.
Thanks for reading. -
I'd be tempted to reinstall the Intel Chipset drivers in Safe Mode from the Command Line with the -overall switch to force the update of all drivers if you haven't already tried that.
Of course, you could have a hardware issue with the single problem port that would require a repair. Unfortunately, the 2 working ports on the other side make this seem more likely. -
Try the other USB port on the left, it might be that one port going bad. You could also try wiggling the connector to see if it registers correctly and if it does, you'll know it's a loose or faulty port.
Updating the chipset drivers isn't a bad idea either. I wonder if anyone tried modifying the shortcut path with -overall to see if it works like it would via command line. That's just curiosity, i'd use the command line to be sure.
If you're going to use the command line to update the drivers, to browse to where you saved the .exe for the chipset installer, use cd to change directory i.e. cd my documents or cd "my documents" to gain access to the my documents folder and cd /d to change drive or partition i.e. cd /d D:\. I had to look for those when i updated since it had been a while since i had used the command line. Once you're in the right directory, type in the name of the installer something.exe -overall. I think the name of the file is infinst_autol.exe, but i'm not certain. -

Hope this may help to find a solution to my problem.
I am not having any problems with the other 2 ports at all. Not like some of the other posts that I've read about their ports not working after hibernation.
Thanks again
JC
My suspicion is that it has something to do with the motherboard. Not looking forward to sending it back out for a third time. -
Still, whether there are 3 or 4, I would probably fix it before the warranty runs out. You could always wait a while for a convenient time when you don't need the laptop though, unless you really need to have all 3/4 going for general use.
Also, you say Bestbuy is slow, can't you RMA it direct to ASUS, which may be faster? -
I don't think I can RMA this because I've owned the laptop over a year. About a year and 3 months now. I have a 2 year service plan with Best Buy. I am not having other issues with my battery not charging correctly and the battery indicator blinking orange. Which goes away after I restart the computer, but comes back.
Just another head ache.
Thanks for the input, but I am now convinced that this is a hardware issue. -
Well, if you have a 2 year service plan with BB, why not use it then?
