Hi everyone, I'm hoping to find an answer to a problem I'm having with my G73JH. I bought it about a year ago and have had no problems the entire time, but a few days ago I shut the top to move my laptop and when I opened it again there was nothing. No sound, no power, no response, nothing. When I press the power button, there is no response either. I've tried running it battery in and out, the power brick still shows a green light and the laptop shows the battery charged light for a split second when I plug it in to the adaptor. I've tried replacing the RAM and removing hard-drives and nothing has worked. Any ideas before I send it away? I'm working out of town for a few months so sending it for an RMA would be a big inconvenience, but I'll do it if I have to.

    Thanks!

Toastershark, sorry to hear that, you have tried many of the usual tricks, please remove all AC power and battery. Press the power switch and hold it for 20 seconds, reassemble and test.
Also try the reset pinhole on the bottom of the machine. It sounds like a mother board issue to me, I hope I am wrong.. let us know, there are many here who have forgotten more about this 'stuff' than I will ever know.

You can also check to make sure that none of the wifi antennae wires are pinning down the reset button.

Open it up :p. You'll need to disassemble up to the point where you remove the palm rest area. You'll be able to clearly see the wires after that.

Just take the back panel off, and make sure both wires are fully clear.

Man just try and pinch through reset hole and you will find if wire is under. If it clicks under presuring then it is free and button is responding :)
You will save yourself job off screwing all this screws

All right so; I took the entire thing apart and didn't see anything wrong with wires or sautering or anything, made sure all the RAM was seated properly (including that hard to get to 4th stick) and re-assembled. I pressed the power button AND IT WORKED!!!

    For a bit.

It ran good for a couple hours, then same thing I closed the lid to transport it and when I re-opened it - there was nothing. Any ideas?

    Stop closing the lid...

When you return from your trip then have it looked at...

Disconnect AC, and remove battery... hit power button for 30 secs, then reconnect everything

btw, I hope you are not shutting down windows, then closing the lid before it finishes, and sending it to hibernate mode, and also moving it before it finishes... jarring the hdd's while they are reading/writing is bad.

Tried that, didn't help me. I've only been closing the top when it idles or fully shut down.

so you took it apart, and put it back, and it booted. on a next boot, it failed.

    1) You could have a loose component. I would disassemble it, and then go over EVERY connection, to ensure proper seating.

    2) I'd also take the mobo battery out, and let the BIOS go dead. Let the system do a full reset.

If it's still flaky, then you prolly need a new mobo.

So the only thing that you made sure was seated properly was the RAM? You didn't do anything else? Of course you might have, inadvertently. Try taking out the front three sticks. If nothing, then put them back in (try turning it on again), then remove the 4th stick, and try booting. It sounds like something is loose to me. I have no idea what happens when a RAM stick is sort of in its slot but not completely or properly. Are you sure they're clicked in fully?

Just to confirm - you don't even get to BIOS? Does it POST?

If it's not the RAM then...bad luck?

Hardware issue, related to the screen. I would go back and check the screen connections and the wireless connections, make sure there is total slack around all of the cables that lead through to the screen and that they are all free to shift during closure and that the wires have not been crushed.

Thanks all, I'll pull it apart again today after work and go through it with a fine toothed comb.

It does sound as though something is shorting when you are closing the screen and normally if it will not allow it to turn back on that is because of the protection to prevent a further short damaging the mobo. The only other reason for this is hardware failure but as you say everything is working fine till you close the screen.

Well I took it all apart, went through every connection I could find and checked the integrity of all the wires. Still nothing, so I guess it's probably pretty well pooched. Thanks for the help everybody, I guess I'll start looking into getting shipped back to ASUS now.

Sorry to hear that fella if its something tripping on the board your best bet is to send it off for RMA make sure you tell them exactly what happens so that they do fix it.

    Good luck.
