Ok So I found out this summer that my G73JH overheats during pretty much any game when it's hot outside, but a few days ago It actually overheat and shutdown while playing Alien Vs Predator all max, when it was pretty cold outside, now I don't have the possibility to RMA it now, and don't want to d o it anyway because I won't have a PC for some time, and since I am on a 2g Edge mobile connection I couldn't get AMD's GPU clock tool (downloaded 2 bad versions, and AMD doesn't seem to have anything official on their site)
anyway IT seems to shutdown when it reaches 110 degrees Celcius and it reaches it pretty fast, so I went to powerplay and set it to maximize battery life when plugged in and to my surprise I get decent FPS even on all high settings, but it doesn't overheat :p
on the other hand I am kinda disappointed in their cooling now :(

revert to stock GPU drivers (i.e. 9.12) would be my suggestion.

Also did u flash to 209 bios?

Laptop cooler is another option if you don't want to RMA.

I am already on stock drivers, never updated and I am on bios 209, it became so annoying, even on 2 year old games on max settings it overheats, which started happening this summer, but now it's not hot at all outside, meh maybe I should replace the thermal paste

Replacing the thermal paste is the way to go. It has fixed pretty much all the overheating G73s I've seen in this forum (including mine).

Here's the thread on overheating GPUs:

yes that thread has a lot of pages can't read them all, I've been pretty skeptic about such a big improvement after applying thermal paste but I may try it.

@Chastity yes I've tried it before and it's not an acceptable solution, cause it's not possible to play games like Gta4 at acceptable framerates, and I don't think it's normal for it to overheat on stock frequencies anyway.

Then you probably don't deserve the answers, do you? Wait, I have an idea ... let us find a way to get other people to do all our work for us. We've also got to figure out how to avoid paying them.

I GOT IT. We'll all become spoiled children brought up in the age of the internet.

110C... thats what my Asus F3jp used to be in English summer with Vents CLOGGED up with CARPET-like dust!

It kept shutting down until i critically damaged the GPU.. however, that was 2 years ago and it still works.. not in Games (screen flickers sometimes) but for work its still fine.

Now to Asus G73.. do you have a laptop cooler? I got 600rpm 22cm <-> one which puts my laptop to about 77 C max on Max resolution and medium-high graphical settings in games like Battlefield 2 Bad company or latest WH40k DoWII Chaos rising (max settings there).

Is there at least 50 cm or more space from the exhaust vents to allow for proper airflow, are the bottom air-suction vents not covered up? This may caused by wrongly dimensioned laptop cooler.. if thats the case, get rubber pieces and lift laptop abit, making sure its secured as well so it wont slide off.. this should help a little.

You can change thermal paste too but personally, thats not so easy job, would try laptop cooler first personally.

Additional: My G73 got stock drivers and stock BIOS, nothing changed or modded. (waiting for GSOD and if it wont happen in a month's time, its all good :D)

    Best of luck n Patience!

My G73JH started overheating very easily after going on a trip. The laptop gets carried in my backpack when I fly and while I am careful, it does get bumped around a bit.

So it started overheating. It would quickly get to over 105C and then shutdown. I went through alot of possibilities but decided to change the thermal paste on the CPU.

Bought a tube of Arctic Silver 5 and followed a youtube video on how to take apart the G73. It's a daunting task but possible if you have any mechanical / electrical knowhow. If you don't, then take it to a notebook repair place and tell them you want the thermal paste changed on the CPU. Once I got it all apart, the paste on the CPU was CRAP! It had no resemblence to proper thermal paste and came off in hard dry clumps. Another point of this is the layer on the CPU was WAY to thick to do any good anyways. I cleaned it and the headsink up and put the new paste on it, reassembled the PC and then ran my video encoding test again.

    Before:
3 of the 8 cores being used (CPU about 32%) for H.264 video encode temperature would hover around 102C. Any more than 3 cores and the machine shutsdown.

    After:
8 of 8 cores being used (CPU 100%) for H.264 video encode temperature is stable at 77C.

For me, this is the only proof I needed to tell me what the problem that I was having was.

Note: I did not reseat the GPU heatsink as I have not had anyproblems with the videocard per se... but if something manifests itself after this, I will let yall know.

    Hope this helps!

My G73Jh started overheating about 6 months ago when playing new graphic intensive games. I dialed the settings in the games down, and then recently I started searching for possible solutions and found this forum.

I looked at the videos, and read a lot of posts and I started on the following:

Updated Bios, and ASUS Video drivers
    Compressed Air

After each step I would start RIFT and check my temps with HWInfo.

What I found was, after cleaning with compressed air, temps had dropped consistently 15 Celsius. They have held steady as I cranked up the graphics. I ran other programs and where previously on the lowest setting eventually I would shut down, now I was running fine.

Thank you to everyone who has posted suggestions and tips.

What Bios did you update and the same question for the Video drivers?
